Dashboard (Homepage) Design Implications
Heuristic Evaluation:
1. Simplify terms and icons on Dashboard cards
The terms used on the dashboard cards (such as "Today's KPI," "Upcoming Events," and
"Smart Jotting") should be simplified and clarified to ensure immediate clarity an
improve user comprehension. Ensure that each card’s label and icon are self-explanatory
and clearly reflect its function. This could involve using more universally understood
terms and visual metaphors that align with users' real-world experiences. A better design
would ensure that users can intuitively understand what each card represents and what
actions they can take. Specifically, designers could rename “Today’s KPI” to “To Do
List”"Upcoming Events" to “Flagged”, and “Smart Jotting” to “Smart Voice Assistant”.
Additionally, a flag icon could be added on the flag card to make it apparent for users’
comprehension. At the same time, designers could replaced the original pen icon with a
microphone icon, which better aligns with users’ natural expectations.
2. Increase Feedback and Clarify "Smart Jotting" Outcomes
The "Smart Jotting" feature should be improved by providing clear, immediate feedback
once a user interacts with it. For instance, after the user click “Smart Jotting”, a visual or
texual change should appear to show that their action was successful and valid. This will
help reduce uncertainty and provide users with confidence that their input has been
properly processed. Specifically, designers could create a voice input page displaying the
visual change after users click “Smart Jotting”.
3. Remove "Upcoming Events" and Replace with "Flagged"
The "Upcoming Events" card was considered confusing by users, as its purpose
overlapped with other elements on the dashboard. It was unclear whether this feature
added unique value to the user experience. As a result, designers could consider
removing this feature and replacing it with a "Flagged" card that highlights events the
user has marked as important. This would streamline the dashboard by focusing on the
most relevant events and giving users the ability to prioritize certain items. Additionally,
the "Flagged" card can use visual cues like flags or highlight colors to easily distinguish
these important events.
Usability Testing:
Optimize the Voice Input Feature and Reduce Confusions
Users experienced confusion when using the voice input feature ("Smart Jotting"). The
process should be streamlined to make it easier and more intuitive. This could be done by
adding more on-screen guidance, such as precise terminology and more understandable
metaphoric icons. Additionally, provide clearer visual feedback (e.g., making the
microphone icon vibrating when the user is talking on the phone). This would help users
feel more confident and ensure they understand how to use the feature correctly without
confusion.
2. Timetable Design Implications
Heuristic Evaluation (Heuristic Evaluation)
1. Add Clear Edit and Delete Entrance for Timetable Events
Ensure that it is immediately obvious to users how to manage their timetable events.
Currently, there is missing an edit and delete entrance, which leads to confusion. To
address this, indicate the colon for editing or deleting. These should be prominently
displayed so users can effortlessly manage their schedule directly from the timetable
view, without needing to navigate to other pages.
2. Introduce Bulk Editing Functionality for Recurring Events
The absence of bulk editing for recurring events limits efficiency. Add a feature that
allows users to apply changes to multiple events at once (e.g., an "Apply to All" button).
This functionality could allow users to update the time and location of recurring events in
a single action, improving usability and time efficiency.
3. Add Visual Markers to Highlight Priority Events
To make it easier for users to prioritize important events, introduce visual indicators such
as highlights with vibrant color and flags to mark vital events. This would allow users to
quickly identify critical tasks or appointments at a glance, helping them to stay organized
and focused on what matters most.
Usability Testing (Usability Testing)
1. Simplify Event Editing Process, Reduce Extra Steps
o The process for editing events should be streamlined to reduce unnecessary
steps. Users struggled with the current editing flow, which required
navigating through several screens. Consider implementing inline editing,
where users can tap on an event and edit the details directly in place, without
needing to leave the main timetable interface. This would make event
management more efficient and user-friendly, minimizing cognitive load and
action complexity.
2. Improve Integration Between Timetable and Map Features
Users had difficulty transitioning between the timetable and map features, particularly
when trying to navigate to their next class. To improve this, introduces a more intuitive
workflow by providing direct access to map navigation from the timetable. For example,
users can tap on an event in the timetable and instantly access the corresponding location
on the map. This update could significantly improve the efficiency of navigation and
could be more prominent with clear visual cues and shortcuts, allowing users to transition
smoothly between features without confusion.
Map/ Navigation
Heuristic Evaluation
Clarify Map Navigation Instructions
The initial map navigation instructions were found to be unclear, with users encountering
ambiguity in the direction and distance indicators (e.g., “Turn right, 100 meters left”). To
resolve this, the navigation wording could be updated to ensure greater clarity and
simplicity. For instance, clearly separate directions and distances, making it easier for
users to follow.
Usability Testing
1. Add a Direct Entrance for Map Navigation
In usability testing, users struggled with navigating to the map. They
encountered difficulty when transitioning from Timetable to the map. To
streamline this, the app now provides direct access to the map from
the Dashboard, and the addition of a push notification when an event is
approaching helps users get to their event location more efficiently. This
reduces time spent on finding the correct navigation entry point and
simplifies the user’s journey.
2. Add Push Notifications for Event Reminders
o Users expressed a need for better reminders when it was time to navigate to
their next event. In response, the redesigned app includes push
notifications that appear when an event is approaching, even when the phone
is locked. Tapping the notification allows users to directly start navigation to
the event. This feature was added to improve user awareness and reduce the
risk of missing important events, directly addressing issues raised during
usability testing.
3. Improve Map Navigation Accessibility
o Many users during usability testing found the process of accessing the map to
be unintuitive. The new design provides clear access points from both the
Dashboard and the Timetable, as well as notifications that guide users
through the app. The improved accessibility of the map feature, along with
the ability to tap into notifications for event navigation, enhances usability by
providing clear, actionable steps for users.
Clarify AR Feature Discoverability with Text Labels and Mode Highlighting
In usability testing, some users expressed confusion about the AR feature due to the
lack of clear visual cues and explicit labeling. To improve the discoverability of
the AR View, explicit textual labels (e.g., "AR View") can be added alongside the
AR icon to make its functionality clearer. This addition ensures that users can easily
identify the feature and understand its purpose. Additionally, to further enhance
user awareness, the app could highlight the current map mode (either Traditional
Map or AR View) with a distinct visual indicator. This clear distinction between the
two modes ensures users always know which map display they are using, reducing
confusion and improving the overall usability of the map feature.
Heuristic Evaluation Findings:
No intuitive navigation icons or direct links from events to the map: This makes it
harder for users to link their timetable to campus navigation.
o Design Implication: Add clear icons or links to easily connect events with the
campus map, allowing users to navigate effortlessly from the timetable to the
physical location of their events.
Lack of clear options/icons to edit or delete timetable events: This causes confusion
about how users can manage their timetable.
o Design Implication: Introduce clear and consistent icons for editing or deleting
