45-Minute Problem Solving Technique - Quick Guide

STEP 1: INTRO & SERVICE MAPPING (5 MIN)


Greet the client & explain the session purpose.
Mention available services:
- Mental Health: Clinics, Ngomahuru, Friendship Bench
- Other: Social welfare, NGOs, youth programs, church/traditional leaders

STEP 2: SCREENING 'TEMPERATURE CHECK' (10 MIN)


Use tools:
- PHQ-9 (Depression), GAD-7 (Anxiety)
- mhGAP (for red flags), ENACT (your competence)
Low Score (04):
- Give psychoeducation
- Suggest self-care (sleep, food, activity, breathing) -> Exit
High Score (5+):
- Watch for suicide, psychosis, SUD
- Begin full session below

STEP 3: ENGAGEMENT & LISTENING (15 MIN)


Build Trust: Use clear, kind, respectful language
Confidentiality: Assure the client
Storytelling: "Wasvika pano pakutaura zviri kukunetsa..."
- Don't interrupt or solve
- Write what the client saysverbatim
Summarize & Read Back: "Ndanyora izvi, pane zvamungada kuwedzera here?"

STEP 4: SIMPLE PROBLEM SOLVING (10 MIN)


Choose 1 manageable problem (not the most severe)
Define it clearly together
Set a SMART Goal (Client chooses):
- Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time-bound
Brainstorm Solutions: List 23 ideas
Pick one action to try before next visit

STEP 5: WRAP-UP (5 MIN)


Reassure: "We may not fix everything, but we've started."
Share tips: Stress relief, sleep hygiene, routine
Plan next steps: Refer, follow-up, or exit with safety plan if needed
