National

In 2014, the Indian Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “Make I

India” movement to boost the manufacturing industry and reduce dependency on foreign

goods.

This initiative was labelled “nationalist” due to the promoting of self-reliance and economic

growth, which I agree with. The intention to provide livelihood to the local artisans whose

demand has been decreasing is a step in the right direction. This move also brought about

foreign investment, improvement in infrastructure and promoted production.

Anti – National

In 2022, famous Bollywood actor Aamir Khan found himself in hot water after comments

from a 2015 interview resurfaced due to which he was labelled “anti-nationalist” and his

upcoming movie ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ was boycotted.

He had addressed an audience at the Ramnath Goenka journalism awards where he voiced

support for intellectuals, writers, academics and filmmakers who had returned their awards to

protest against growing extremism in India, saying that it is one non-violent way to send your

message across and he supports all non-violent protests. This action came after Shiv Sena

activists attacked various venues where known Pakistani professionals were due to arrive and

a mob of a hundred people beat to death a 50-year-old man over suspicions of having

consumed or stored beef. Aamir Khan expressed that “growing insecurity in the country has

alarmed him and he and wife Kiran Rao do not feel the country safe for their children.”

Labelling his comments as “anti-national” is just a way for the public to turn a blind eye to

the extremism growing in the country. Being Muslim, he conveyed his concern for the safety

of his family in a country where Muslims are actively being persecuted. Instead of
acknowledging a problem and taking steps to solve it, the public believes that voicing out

issues against something happening in India means declaring hate for the country.
