Key Features of the Video
Limbic System-
It is the set of system in the brain that is primarily involved in emotions. The following are the
parts of limbic system that are involved in emotions.
Thalamus- Relay Station
Things that we see, hear, touch and other involving senses are worked upon in thalamus.
Thalamus directs these senses to appropriate areas in cortex and other areas of brain.
Amygdala- Aggression Centre
When it is stimulates it creates feelings of anger, violence, fear and anxiety.
If lesion occurs in amygdala, it creates mellowing effects and causes a disorder caused Kulver-
Bucy Syndrome which has symptoms like hyperorality, hyper sexuality and dis-inhibitied
behavior (acting impulsively, ignoring social conventions etc.)
If stimulated then can cause fear and anxiety for which benzodiazepines are given.
Hippocampus- Below Thalamus
Key role in forming memory, converts short term memory (STM) in long term memory(LTM).
Memories can evoke emotions.
If destroyed- an old memory stays intact, but cannot form new memories.
Hypothalamus
Located below thalamus. Plays major role in various functions of body but coming to emotions it
regulate autonomic nervous system than includes parasympathetic and non parasympathetic
systems which are involved in flight and fight responses.
