Chapter 10: Force and Motion - Summary Notes

1. Concept of Force

- Force: A push or pull applied on an object.

- Effects of Force:

- Causes an object at rest to move.

- Changes the speed of a moving object.

- Changes the direction of an object's motion.

- Alters the shape of an object.

2. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

- Balanced Forces:

- Equal and opposite forces that cancel each other out, resulting in no movement or change in

motion.

- Unbalanced Forces:

- Forces that are not equal and opposite, causing a change in motion.

3. Inertia and Mass

- Inertia: The resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest.

- Mass as a Measure of Inertia: Objects with greater mass resist changes in motion more than

lighter ones.

4. Newton's Laws of Motion

- First Law of Motion (Law of Inertia):

- "Every object remains in a state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by
an unbalanced external force."

- Second Law of Motion (Force and Acceleration):

- Formula: F = ma

- Third Law of Motion (Action and Reaction):

- "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

5. Momentum

- Momentum (p): A measure of the quantity of motion of a moving body.

- Formula: p = mv

- Conservation of Momentum: In an isolated system, total momentum before and after a collision

remains constant if no external force acts on it.

6. Force of Friction

- Friction: The resistance force that opposes the motion of an object.

- Types of Friction: Static, Kinetic (Sliding), Rolling.

- Factors Affecting Friction: Surface roughness and Normal force.

- Advantages of Friction: Enables walking, driving, and holding objects.

- Disadvantages of Friction: Causes wear and tear in machinery and energy loss as heat.

- Reducing Friction: Use of lubricants, ball bearings, or smoother surfaces.

7. Thrust and Pressure

- Thrust: The perpendicular force exerted on a surface.

- Pressure: Thrust per unit area.

- Formula: Pressure = Thrust / Area

Important Formulas Summary

1. Momentum:

p = mv

2. Newton's Second Law of Motion:

F = ma

3. Conservation of Momentum:

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

4. Pressure:

Pressure = Thrust / Area
