Distance Relay Settings for Power Systems

The document outlines exercises related to distance relays in power system protection, focusing on settings for three-zone distance relays for different transmission lines. It includes calculations for current and potential transformers, as well as recommendations for modifications based on relay responses to various load conditions. The exercises aim to ensure proper protection settings for the transmission system under specified conditions.

Distance Relays

1. Consider the transmission system shown is utilizing a CT with a turns ratio of

500:5 and PT with a turns ratio of 20 000: 69.3. The relay Rab is set to protect
the line AB, and back up the two lines BC and BD. The impedances of the
three lines are as shown.
i. Set 3 zones distance relay (Rab).
ii. Check zone (2) setting & recommend modifications if any.

2. The power system shown has a nominal voltage of 220 KV. For protecting
line AB, current transformers of 1500:5 and potential transformers of
220 KV/69.3 V are applied to 3 step directional impedance relay.

i. Determine suitable 3 zone settings for the distance relay.

ii. Check zone (2) of relay setting with respect to zone (1) setting of the
relay protecting line BD, and recommend needed modifications if any.
iii. Check response of relay (R) for a load of 1000 A.
iv. Check response of relay (R) for a maximum load of 1500 A.

3. For the system shown set the three zones of the relay Rb. Assume that the
relative magnitudes of I1, I2 remain unchanged for any fault on the system
between the buses A through G. It is assumed (as determined by the short-
circuit study) that I2 / I1 = 0.5.
