New Integrated Storage Module Introduction

The document outlines an engineering change (A54257) to introduce a new Integrated Storage Module (ISM) that replaces outdated 3.5" floppy drives with Compact Flash (CF) cards, due to the difficulty in sourcing floppy disks. Existing systems not running specific firmware versions will require a firmware upgrade to be compatible with the new storage device. The change aims to ensure continued support for the MKII Control system and is targeted for immediate implementation.

Engineering Instruction: A54257

Change Type To alter an existing pre-engineered Standard product design - part identity is affected
Factory Implementation Grade (3) Low Urgency and Not Critical, Intro based on minimising stock losses
Field Implementation Grade (F) No Modification of field engines is recommended
Title Introduction of new Integrated Storage Module (ISM) CT93582B/01
Benefit Continued support of the MKII Control system
Reason for Change Whilst it is still possible to obtain 3.5" floppy disk drives for the existing ISM (CT93582/05), it
is now very difficult to obtain the floppy disks that fit into them. It is also anticipated that the
3.5" drives will become unavailable shortly. A replacement for the floppy drive has therefore
been engineered that uses Compact Flash (CF) cards. Unfortunately existing systems that
are not running either ECCOS V5.4.0 or V4.9.0 will require a firmware upgrade (PROM
change) to work with the new storage device. A detailed upgrade matrix will be referenced
by this change form.

Use of Compact Flash Removable Media.

The Compact Flash (CF) drive on the new Integrated Storage Module is in fact a PC card slot. In order to use a
Compact Flash card in the drive, you will need a Compact Flash to PC card adapter, similar to the one shown in the
picture below. They are available from Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Lincoln under part number CT92451/60.

The ISM should be supplied with a CF to PC card adapter and

this adapter should remain with the ISM. When not in use it can
simply be left in the drive until needed. The CF card can simply
be inserted into the adapter while it is still in the drive. However
when it is time to remove the CF card, it will be necessary to
eject the adapter from the drive to easily remove the CF card.
This is normally the point where the adapter gets lost, so it is
important to remember to replace the adapter back in the drive,
and not just leave it lying around.

It is recommended that field staff carry a spare adapter, so that

should they arrive at site and find it is missing, they will still be
able to use the drive.

Compact Flash Cards - Formatting!! (THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!)

You can not insert any Compact Flash card in the ISM and expect it to work. Before the MKII system can access a
Compact Flash card it has to be formatted. This CAN NOT be done on the MKII system. It can only be done on a PC.
For details of how to format a Compact Flash card, read the following document.

"/vobs/vob2/text/manuals/CF format for [Link]"

Compact Flash Cards

T2310/001 For internal use only

CONFIDENTIAL_____________________________________________________________________________________________Sheet 5 of 12

Other than the formatting, any Compact Flash card can be used, provided that it has a capacity of 64MB or greater.
Suitable cards may be purchased locally, but note that they will still require formatting before they can be used.
Compact Flash cards are also available from SIT Lincoln. The following part numbers are suitable.

CT92451/66 CT92451/67 CT92451/70 CT92451/71 CT92451/72

These too will require formatting, before they can be used.

IMPORTANT - READ THIS NEXT SECTION

CAREFULLY OTHERWISE YOU MAY SEND
THE WRONG SPARE TO SITE!
Supplying CT93582B/01 as a spare

From a spares point of view implementation is potentially quite difficult. There are two possible situations.

The site is already using a CT93582B/01 and requires a replacement.

This is no problem, because if they are already using a CT93582B/01 the compatibility issues have already been
addressed and you can simply supply another CT93582B/01. Unfortunately in the short term this is unlikely to be the
case and spares engineering will be faced with the other situation below.

The site have been using a CT93582/01 to /05 (Floppy based ISM) and require a replacement.

This is a problem, because unless the site is running either V4.9.0 or V5.4.0 of ECCOS the Compact Flash card drive
will not work. If the site is running on any other version of ECCOS (or in the case of PPM1 GTMON), a PROM
upgrade will be necessary. This in itself is not a difficult procedure, and can be carried out at site by an experienced
field technician. The main difficulty is in determining what is fitted at site in the first place. Also if the site is running
multiple PPMs, all the PPMs will require a PROM upgrade.

The necessary procedure to supply a CT93582B/01 to site is as follows.

1) Find out exactly what PPMs are fitted in the control system in question.

2) For each PPM, find the part number in the "PPM EPROM UPGRADE TABLES" below in the "Original Part"
column. Once you have located the part number, look in the "EPROM" column. If it states "No modification
necessary", the PPM is to the latest standard and requires no upgrade. If there is a CT part number in the "EPROM"
column, order that part and also note down the part number in the "Part Becomes" column for future reference.

3) Before they are shipped to site, the EPROMs should be clearly labelled on the packaging to identify which PPMs
they are intended for. Instructions to site for changing the EPROM are essentially those written down in the "ECCOS
Upgrade" guide, which can be located on the Controls Intranet page. Once the EPROM has been fitted, the part
number of the PPM should be changed to the one indicated in the "Part Becomes" column identified earlier.

Additional work required for non-ECCOS PPM1s

If you are upgrading a non-ECCOS version of PPM1 (CT92474), it will be necessary to install the latest SCSI patch
before you can use the Compact Flash based floppy drive. For this reason it is intended that the latest SCSI patch will
be pre-installed on MS60.

From MS60, the SCSI patch can be installed as per the instructions in "/vobs/vob2/text/manuals/[Link]".

If for any reason the SCSI patch is not on the MS60 drive of the supplied ISM, it can be obtained from the following
location.

"/vobs/vob2/release/exe/[Link]@@/main/4"

The DDT32 "downfile" utility can then be used to download the SCSI patch to MS60.
