PROJECT : CONSTRUCTION OF AN AIR COOLER

ABSTRACT
The document discusses air coolers, which are economical and efficient cooling systems that
use evaporation to cool indoor and outdoor spaces. . Air coolers work by pulling warm air
through a water-wetted filter medium, where the water evaporates and cools the air before
releasing it into the room. . There are different types of air coolers classified by their cooling
techniques, and air coolers provide cooling through evaporation without using harmful
refrigerants like air conditioners.

This project investigates the effectiveness of an evaporative air cooler, a

device that cools air through the process of water evaporation. The core
concept involves drawing warm air over a water-saturated medium, causing
water to evaporate and absorb heat from the air, thus reducing its
temperature. The design incorporates a fan to circulate air, a water reservoir,
and a pump to maintain the wetness of the cooling medium. The project will
evaluate the cooling performance of the device in a controlled environment,
analyzing temperature reduction and humidity changes. The goal is to
demonstrate the potential of evaporative cooling as a viable alternative to
conventional air conditioning, particularly in regions where high temperatures
and low humidity are prevalent.

CHAPTER 1 :
1.0 BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION
The first modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland
Carrier, a skilled engineer who began experimenting with the laws of
humidity control to solve an application problem at a printing plant in
Brooklyn, NY. Borrowing from the concepts of mechanical refrigeration
established in earlier years, Carrier’s system sent air through coils filled
with cold water, cooling the air while at the same time removing moisture
to control room humidity
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT AND JUSTIFICATION

Problem Statement: Traditional air conditioning systems are expensive to

purchase and operate, making them inaccessible to many residents in
informal settlements, who often experience extreme heat during the day. This
can lead to discomfort, health problems, and reduced productivity.

Page | 1
Justification: This project aims to develop a low-cost, portable air cooler using
readily available materials and the principles of evaporative cooling. By
utilizing a fan, water, and a cooling medium (like a porous material), the
system will cool the air through evaporation. This approach will provide a more
affordable and accessible cooling solution for individuals and families in
informal settlements, potentially improving living conditions and overall
wellbeing. The project will also investigate the use of locally sourced materials
to further reduce costs and promote sustainability.

different conditions.

1.4 LIMITATIONS

Specific limitations to consider for a science project:

• Humidity:
Air coolers work by evaporating water, which adds moisture to the air. In humid
climates, this can make the air feel even warmer and less comfortable, and can also
negatively impact the cooler's effectiveness according to Voltas and Tata Neu. In a
science project, this can be tested by measuring humidity levels before and after
operating the cooler in a controlled environment.
• Cooling Capacity:
Air coolers generally cool less effectively than air conditioners, especially in larger
spaces. For a science project, this can be evaluated by comparing the temperature drop
achieved by the air cooler to a control area or a more powerful cooling system.
• Space Limitations:
Air coolers are typically better suited for smaller rooms or localized cooling, rather than
whole-house solutions. This limitation can be addressed in a science project by
specifying the intended space for the cooler and measuring its effectiveness within that
space.
• Water Usage:
Air coolers require a constant supply of water for evaporation. This can be a limitation in
areas with water scarcity or for a science project where water conservation is a key
factor.
• Maintenance:
Air coolers need regular maintenance, such as cleaning the cooling pads and refilling
the water tank. This can be a factor in a science project, especially if the cooler is
designed for long-term use.
• Health Considerations:
Prolonged use of an air cooler, especially in humid conditions, can increase the risk of
respiratory issues or affect the longevity of certain materials. These potential health and
material-related issues can be part of the science project evaluation, focusing on the
impact of the cooler on indoor air quality and material stability.

Page | 3
• Temperature Range:
Air coolers may not be able to lower the temperature as much as air conditioners,
especially in very hot and dry climates. This can be a significant limitation for a science
project if the goal is to achieve a specific low temperature.
• Power Consumption:
While generally more energy-efficient than air conditioners, air coolers still consume
power for the fan and pump. This can be a consideration for a science project,
especially if evaluating the cooler's energy efficiency is a key aspect.
• Noise:
Some air coolers can be noisy, which can be a drawback for some users. This can be a
factor in the science project, particularly if the noise level is a parameter being
evaluated.
By acknowledging and addressing these limitations, students can conduct a
more thorough and realistic science project on air coolers.

CHAPTER 2
2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

Evaporative air coolers are used widely in rural as well as urban regions, as they are financially
cheaper and require no prerequisite installation setup.
Evaporative coolers are based on the simple principle that when unsaturated air comes in contact
with water, the water evaporates. In this process, the moisture content of air increases, while its
temperature decreases. Evaporative cooling is a physical phenomenon in which the evaporation of
cooling water into surrounding occurs, due to transfer of latent heat of surrounding air to the
cooling water. This results in cooling of the room with increased moisture content of air leaving
the cooler. Evaporative cooling is subdivided in two groups as direct evaporative cooling and
indirect evaporative cooling. The factors we consider for design of desert cooler are temperature,
pressure, humidity, moisture, saturation effectiveness.
The reason for designing Air Cooler for urban is to eliminate any hindrance by cost factor
and concentrate for complete functionality and customer satisfaction. The product should be
operable as per urban needs, lifestyle and meet the functionality criterions of present Air
coolers. Cooling methods for industrial applications like spot cooling, ultrasonic cooling
have greatly developed under quality engineering solutions, which industries get. This
project t to improvise on the existing technology of cooling air by evaporation using a
different mechanism to accomplish the same. The mechanism employed is mist cooling of
air which is already implemented in various industrial applications. This mechanism and
technology is thus miniaturized and optimized for Air Cooler.
