Upgrading Pasir Gudang Highway FT17

The Malaysian government is undertaking a project to upgrade the Pasir Gudang Highway (FT17) from four to six lanes, specifically from the Bandar Seri Alam/Taman Rinting interchange to Pasir Gudang over approximately 5.0 km. The project aims to improve the existing Level of Service (LOS) which is currently rated F, facilitating better access for heavy vehicles to the industrial area and port. The document outlines the methodology for installing and monitoring instrumentation equipment, including deep settlement gauges and settlement markers, to ensure structural integrity during the upgrade.

Project Introduction

a. Preface

The government of Malaysia intends to carry out the project for "Menaiktaraf
Lebuhraya Pasir Gudang (FT17) Daripada Empat (4) Lorong Kepada Enam (6)
Lorong, Johor Phase 2B: Dari PersimpanganBandar Seri Alam/ Taman Rinting
Ke Pasir Gudang". the road upgrading project is to upgrade Pasir Gudang highway
(FT17) is a four (4) lane dual carriageway route with U5 standard that connects the
second link highway (second link) to the interchange of Jalan Pasir Gudang. This
road which connects Johor Bahru city centre is the main route for heavy vehicles to
the industrial area and Pasir Gudang port. The existing Level of Service (LOS) is F
and need to be upgraded. This project involves the phase 2B project which will be
upgraded starting from the interchange of Bandar Seri Alam/ Taman Rinting and
ending at the interchange of Pasir Gudang highway with a road length of
approximately 5.0km.

1.0 OBJECTIVE

This method statement is to outline the method for installation and monitoring
instrumentation works.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

This method statement will cover the procedures to install and monitor instrumentation
equipment for deep settlement gauges/settlement plate and settlement marker. This
equipment monitors any settlement for widening and fill area.

3.0 METHOD

Settlement Gauges/Settlement Plate

The method of installation for the deep settlement gauges is as described below:

a) The base plate of 500mm x 500mm is installed on the geotextile,

sand layer or as specified by the drawing.

b) Some drainage materials etc. Excavation

are placed over the base plate position
to provide a firm and level bedding surface for the base plate to seat.

c) The base plate is checked for position and verticality and the base
plate level and top of the rod level taken.

d) The 85mm diameter PVC pipe with cap is put over the base unit and
the base plate covered up with more drainage material to keep the
installation firmly placed.
Joint Inspection
e) The readings should be recorded after each layer of filling. Data collection will be
recorded as per Table 1.

f) Subsequent extension lengths are installed when the level of the

completed fill is 250mm below the top of the preceding lengths.

g) Protective cover shall be placed after installation works.

Settlement Marker
The method of installation for the settlement marker is as described below:

a) A 0.3m x 0.3m hole is first excavated at the settlement marker location.

b) The 25mm diameter 1.075m long M.S rod is driven 1.0m into the ground.

c) The hole is then backfield with approximately 0.03m3 of concrete.

d) As the concrete sets, the reference number is described on the surface.

e) Levels of the top of the rod shall be measured using precise leveling.
