Reflection Paper: Designing an Interactive PowerPoint Presentation on Types of

Conflict in Literature

This reflection paper discusses the design process, instructional intentions,

platform selection rationale, and the impact of multimedia elements in an interactive
PowerPoint presentation on types of conflict in literature. The presentation, designed
for 7th-grade English students, aims to engage students actively with the concept of
conflict in literature through a game-like format.
The design process began with a thorough understanding of the learning
objectives. The primary goal was to move beyond passive learning and foster a
deeper understanding of the six types of conflict (character vs. self, character vs.
character, character vs. society, character vs. nature, character vs. supernatural, and
character vs. technology). My groupmates and I wanted students to not just memorize
definitions but also to apply their knowledge through interactive exercises.
The presentation was structured to follow a clear learning progression.
For introduction, a captivating opening to grab students' attention and set the stage for
the lesson. There are clear definitions and examples of each conflict type, presented
visually with images and concise explanations. And series of image-based multiple-
choice questions testing students' understanding of the different conflict types.
Immediate feedback is provided after each question, reinforcing correct answers and
guiding students towards the right answers if they make a mistake.

The instructional intention was to create a dynamic and engaging learning

experience that caters to diverse learning styles. The interactive game element allows
for active participation, immediate feedback, and self-assessment. The visual aids
(images) help students visualize the concepts, making them more memorable and
relatable. The concise explanations ensure accessibility for all students.
We chose Power Point Presentation in making this tool due to several reasons.
First, PowerPoint is widely available and accessible to most students and teachers,
requiring minimal technical expertise especially when used in far-flung schools.
Second, students are generally familiar with PowerPoint presentations, minimizing the
learning curve for navigating the interactive elements. It also allows for the
incorporation of various multimedia elements, such as images, animations, and
potentially voice-over narration. Third, creating interactive elements within
PowerPoint is relatively straightforward, allowing for efficient development and
modification. Last, it is readily available as part of the Microsoft Office suite, making
it a cost-effective solution.
While other platforms might offer more advanced interactive features,
PowerPoint provides a balance between functionality, accessibility, and ease of use,
making it a suitable choice for this specific educational context.

The multimedia elements like voice-over and animations have the potential to
significantly enhance literacy learning. The images used in the presentation help
students visualize abstract concepts like different types of conflict, making the
learning process more concrete and engaging. Images can serve as powerful
mnemonic devices, aiding in recall and comprehension. Also, the interactive game
element transforms passive learning into an active process. Students actively engage

with the material, reinforcing their understanding through immediate feedback and
repeated practice.

The addition of voice-over narration could further enhance engagement and

comprehension, particularly for students who benefit from auditory learning. A clear
and engaging voice-over could guide students through the presentation, explaining
concepts in a more personalized and accessible manner. Strategic use of animations
could highlight key information, draw attention to important details, and make the
presentation more visually appealing and engaging.
In conclusion, the design of this interactive PowerPoint presentation prioritizes
active learning and caters to diverse learning styles. The choice of PowerPoint as the
digital platform balances accessibility, functionality, and ease of use. The
incorporation of multimedia elements, particularly visual aids and an interactive
game, significantly enhances literacy learning by making the learning process more
engaging, memorable, and effective. Future iterations could further enhance the
presentation by including voice-over narration and well-placed animations. As
English teacher myself, I will try this tool in this upcoming school year in my English
7 class.
