Aims:
- To improve students’ skills of reading for gist;
- To develop students’ skills of speaking about friends and friendship using a vocabulary
prompt (monologue);
- To develop students’ monologue speaking skills on the base of a communicative
situation.
Objectives: by the end of the lesson the students will be able:
- To demonstrate their monologue speaking skill on the topic “Friend and me” (10-12
sentences)
Anticipated problems and solutions:
- Pupils might be afraid to speak because of mistakes
(Solution: I won’t interrupt them and correct them while they are speaking, I will make
the general analysis of the students’ mistakes after the activity without mentioning the
names of students who made them)

Text
My name is David and I’m happy to have many friends. I believe that life is meaningless
without them, because sometimes you need a friend to pour your heart out. Of course, you feel safe
and protected in the family, but very often I’d like to have a piece of advice from someone who sees
life through my eyes and this is my best friend Andrew. He supports me in all situations, no matter
if I’m sometimes wrong. But then later he’ll tell me to my face whether I was impolite or unfair. He
has never been insincere. I appreciate that.
My friend‘s name is Dan. I like to socialize with him, because he is unpredictable. Every
date is different with him and unforgettable. Last time he taught me how to write a limerick. It’s a
kind of a little illogical and strange poem which has only five rhyming lines. I thought my efforts
would be useless, but Dan praised me. He can find the words to encourage me and I never feel
inferior to him. I suppose due to this quality Dan has many devoted friends and finds them easily.
My best friend Ann calls me “a shoulder to cry on”. She always tells me secrets and I never
refuse to listen to her. I do my best to help her. Very often friends are everything to me. It’s cool to
do fun stuff together like dancing at parties, hanging at the computer club or just talking. Very often
I bake a cake and invite my friends to my place to talk about life, listen to music or watch a new
film. Sometimes we argue, but they never bully me. Life is wonderful with friends.
