1. Introduction
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is profoundly transforming various aspects of
society, driven by advancements in technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial
Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), cloud computing, and big data
analytics. These innovations are transforming industries, including education, which is evolving
towards more flexible, technology-driven models.
Historically, education has adapted to societal changes, from knowledge transmission methods to
learning environments. In Industry 4.0, traditional models are giving way to lifelong learning,
remote education, and a shift in educators’ roles from knowledge providers to facilitators. Among
these advancements, AI is a key driver, enhancing education through intelligent automation,
personalized learning, and data-driven insights.
Recognizing its potential, Vietnam has been actively integrating AI into education, with various
institutions adopting AI-powered tools for teaching, learning, and administrative management.
However, while AI presents numerous opportunities, it also brings challenges that require careful
consideration.
This paper aims to assess the impact of AI on Vietnam’s education sector by analyzing both its
positive and negative effects while exploring the opportunities and challenges it brings. Based on
this analysis, the paper will propose solutions to optimize AI implementation in education,
ensuring that this technology is harnessed effectively and sustainably.

2. Overview of AI in the Education Sector

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is a branch of computer science aimed at creating systems capable
of performing tasks that require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-
solving, and understanding natural language. In education, AI is applied through Artificial
Intelligence in Education (AIEd), which began in the 1970s, focusing on personalizing education
by collecting student feedback, assessing abilities, identifying weaknesses, and adjusting
learning content for individuals or groups [1].
Globally, AI has been widely implemented in education to enhance teaching and learning
efficiency. Technologies such as virtual assistants, automated grading systems, and intelligent
online learning platforms are helping to personalize learning experiences for students. Major
educational companies like Coursera, Duolingo, and Khan Academy have integrated AI into their
platforms [2]. In Europe, countries like France and Germany have made significant investments
in AI-powered educational platforms, such as the automated lesson system Ada. Meanwhile, in
Asia, Japan is pioneering the use of robots and AI, such as Pepper, to support education in
schools [2].
In Vietnam, AI is gradually becoming an essential part of the digital transformation in the
education sector. The government has introduced various policies to promote AI applications in
teaching, notably Decision No. 131/QĐ-TTg in 2022 on strengthening digital transformation in
education [3]. Many schools and technology enterprises have implemented AI-based learning
platforms, helping to personalize educational content and support students in accessing
knowledge more effectively.

3. The Impacts of AI on the Education Sector in Vietnam

As AI continues to evolve and integrate into various fields, its impact on education is significant.
In Vietnam, the adoption of AI in education is driving noticeable changes, affecting both students
and teachers. The following section will explore the diverse impacts of AI on Vietnam’s
education sector, starting with its positive contributions.
3.1. Positive Impacts
This section highlights the positive contributions of AI in the education sector, particularly
focusing on how it benefits both students and teachers by enhancing the learning experience and
teaching process.
Impacts on Students
AI brings significant benefits to students, particularly in personalized learning. Each student has
a different learning pace and capability, and AI can help identify and address individual needs. AI
systems can collect and analyze data from the learning process to create tailored learning paths,
allowing students to focus on the areas that need the most improvement.
VioEdu is the first AI-powered
intelligent learning system in
Vietnam, developed by FPT. The
system generates hundreds of
thousands of personalized learning
and exam preparation pathways
based on students' responses to
assess their understanding. It then
creates an individualized
"competency map," highlighting
strengths and areas needing
improvement (Figure 1) [1]. In a
trial with 2,000 elementary students
in Hanoi, 73.8% showed significant
progress after 3-6 months of using
the platform. Additionally, VioEdu
helps reduce learning time by 30-

50% while significantly improving
learning efficiency [4].
Moreover, AI plays a crucial role in boosting student engagement and motivation. Intelligent
learning tools, such as AI chatbots, provide instant explanations, answer student queries, and
support the overall learning process. Additionally, integrating gamification - incorporating game
elements into education, enhances student interest and participation. Furthermore, AI can
monitor students' learning motivation, adjust lesson difficulty accordingly, and help maintain
enthusiasm while minimizing stress throughout the learning journey [5].

Impact on Teachers
AI not only supports students but also helps teachers reduce administrative workloads and
improve teaching quality. AI has a clear impact on lesson preparation, teaching, interaction, and
assessment, thus strongly influencing and transforming the way students learn. For instance, AI
tools can be used to prepare lessons, synthesize knowledge, and efficiently evaluate and grade
students' assignments, leading to higher quality teaching outcomes.
AI can also help teachers create lesson plans that are better suited to the level and needs of each
class. By analyzing students' learning data, AI can provide insights into individual strengths and
weaknesses, allowing teachers to adapt their teaching methods flexibly. Furthermore, AI can
support the training and development of pedagogical skills through online learning platforms for
teachers, helping them access the most advanced teaching methods.
3.2. Negative Impacts
Every technology, when applied in practice, has both benefits and risks. AI is no exception to this
rule. Along with its positive contributions, AI also brings about many negative impacts,
particularly in the educational environment. For students, the rapid development of AI has
created several thought-provoking effects on various aspects.
Impacts on Students
Although AI can create a personalized learning environment, allowing students to learn at their
own pace, AI-driven education may also reduce personal interaction between teachers and
students. This means that students may not develop essential communication skills, which are an
important part of the educational process [6].
Moreover, AI is diminishing academic integrity as students can easily use this technology to
complete assignments, tests, or even theses without putting in the effort to think critically.
Cheating is becoming more prevalent because AI can generate entirely new content, making
plagiarism detection tools harder to identify [7].
The abuse of AI also leads students to become increasingly lazy and lose their creative thinking
abilities. Instead of actively exploring and solving problems, many students choose to rely
entirely on AI for quick answers. Without practicing logical thinking, students' analytical and
creative skills gradually diminish. This issue is particularly evident in subjects that require
higher-order thinking, such as mathematics, social sciences, and humanities, where AI can
completely replace the student's thought process [7].
Additionally, AI often provides inaccurate or unverified information, leading to students
acquiring knowledge that is not correct. According to a report from the Journal of Education
(2024), students rated the use of AI to assist with writing course reports and theses as being at the
lowest level of effectiveness [8]. The main reason is that AI presents various opinions without
providing references, making it difficult for students to determine the authenticity of the
information. Since AI synthesizes data from many sources, including unreliable ones, the content
it generates may be distorted or outdated. Many students do not habitually verify information,
leading to passive knowledge acquisition and making them more susceptible to incorrect
information.
Impacts on Teachers
As students can easily use AI to complete assignments without thinking for themselves, teachers
are increasingly finding it difficult to accurately assess each student's true abilities. When
assignments become uniform in form but lack depth in personal thinking, teachers struggle to
distinguish between students who genuinely understand the material and those who simply rely
on AI to complete tasks. This not only affects the quality of assessments but also undermines the
role of teachers in guiding, shaping critical thinking, and fostering students' creativity.
Furthermore, as cheating becomes more common, genuine learning motivation is eroded, leading
teachers to face a less effective teaching environment, one that lacks real effort from students.
Additionally, Vietnamese teachers still face significant challenges in accessing and utilizing
technology, particularly as AI is increasingly integrated into education. According to a survey by
the Vietnam Institute of Educational Science (2024), only about 20% of teachers regularly use
technology in their teaching, while 15% rarely or never use it. Notably, nearly 50% of teachers,
primarily from disadvantaged areas, cannot access digital teaching materials, and 39% of high
schools have not developed digital resources [9]. This shows a significant gap in technology
access among teachers, making it difficult for them to adapt to the changes AI brings. As AI
becomes a common teaching tool, teachers lacking technological skills risk falling behind,
struggling to maintain teaching effectiveness, and facing pressure to self-learn in order to keep
up with new trends.

4. Opportunities & Challenges for the Future of Education in Vietnam

From the analysis above, it is clear that AI is having a profound impact on education in Vietnam,
bringing both positive and negative effects. While AI helps personalize learning, enhances
teaching effectiveness, and reduces administrative work for teachers, it also raises issues about
academic integrity, students' creative thinking abilities, and the pressure for teachers to innovate.
Given the relentless development of technology, Vietnam's education sector must leverage the
opportunities AI brings while addressing the challenges it faces in the near future to ensure
sustainable growth.
4.1. Opportunities
First, let's consider the opportunities that AI could bring to education in Vietnam in the near
future:
AI Creates a Modern Learning Experience and Increases Learning Productivity
AI offers a modern learning experience by creating an interactive environment where students
can not only absorb knowledge through reading but also listen, touch, and directly interact with
materials, quizzes, and educational games [10]. Thanks to its ability to visualize information, AI
helps simulate complex concepts such as mathematical formulas or chemistry experiments in a
more vivid and understandable way.
Machine learning methods and data mining are used to explore specific educational data in order
to better understand students and establish the content they need to study. This helps learners
maximize the "costs" in terms of time, effort, and resources to achieve the highest possible
outcomes (Bali, 2017). AI also contributes to improving learning efficiency by providing
immediate feedback, allowing students to quickly identify and address weaknesses instead of
waiting for tests or end-of-term assessments [2].
AI Opens Up Unlimited Learning Opportunities
In the future, AI will open up limitless learning opportunities, enabling learners to access
knowledge anytime, anywhere, without being bound by space or time. Through AI-integrated
online learning platforms, learners can proactively engage with a vast pool of knowledge without
having to follow a fixed schedule or be dependent on a physical location.
A notable example is Mobile Learning (M-learning) - a flexible learning method that relies on
mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Unlike traditional E-learning, M-learning
leverages the flexibility of mobile devices to allow learners to access knowledge at any time and
place, even while on the move [11].
Thanks to these potentials, AI will not only make M-learning more effective but also foster the
lifelong learning trend, enabling Vietnamese people to easily access knowledge in an ever-
changing world.
AI Helps Automate Education, Reducing Teacher Workload
In traditional education, teachers spend a significant amount of time on repetitive tasks such as
grading assignments, evaluating essays, and assessing tests. Not only are these tasks time-
consuming, but they also create a sense of monotony and fatigue, reducing teaching efficiency.
The support of AI helps automate these tasks, allowing educators to focus more on professional
development, creating innovative lesson plans, and providing better student support.
AI tools provide interactive and customizable software, integrating virtual reality and being
deployed on digital devices. As a result, teachers can reduce administrative burdens, improving
the quality of teaching. AI also assists in translating educational materials, creating an interactive
learning environment, and adapting more effectively to diverse student needs.
AI Provides "Virtual Teachers"
In an AI-integrated classroom, students have the opportunity to interact with a "virtual teacher" -
a system based on machine learning and artificial intelligence to offer an effective and practical
online learning experience [10]. By applying AI in teaching platforms, it is possible to collect
and analyze information about students' habits and behaviors, thereby building models that
provide real-time feedback on students' understanding and engagement with each subject.
Moreover, AI can act as an intelligent teaching assistant, offering suggestions and comments
whenever it detects that a student is struggling or repeatedly making mistakes in a particular area
of knowledge. This helps reduce the administrative workload for teachers, enhances the quality
of teaching, and enables them to focus more on improving teaching methods and furthering their
professional development.
4.2. Challenges
Although AI brings many opportunities for innovation in education, the process of applying this
technology is not without its challenges. The misuse of AI can lead to academic disparities and
raise concerns about technological infrastructure and ethical use. These issues will be analyzed in
more detail in the following sections:
Inequity in the Academic Playing Field
The misuse of AI tools like ChatGPT can create inequality in academic settings, where some
students have an advantage by using AI tools, while others may not have access or choose not to
use them for ethical reasons [12]. This skews grading and academic recognition, diminishing the
value of individual effort. Furthermore, improper use of AI can lead to unintentional plagiarism,
highlighting the need for education on AI ethics [13].
Inequity Due to Lack of Basic Infrastructure
Not all students have access to AI and the internet, potentially widening the digital divide.
According to Hilbert (2015), a lack of technological infrastructure can create a digital divide in
accessing knowledge and making data-driven decisions. Moreover, the initial investment
required for AI in education is quite high, necessitating upgrades in infrastructure and training
personnel to use AI effectively [14].
Data and Privacy Risks
The use of AI like ChatGPT in education raises concerns about the accuracy and reliability of
information. Since ChatGPT is trained on vast amounts of raw, unfiltered data, it may not always
be objective and can contain significant errors that have been reported [13]. Additionally,
educational data collection must ensure that demographic factors such as age, gender, and
socioeconomic status are adequately represented (UNESCO, 2018). If the data does not reflect
the diversity of students, AI models may become biased and produce unfair results, affecting the
quality of education.
Furthermore, AI systems collect and analyze personal data about students, including learning
habits, grades, and personal information, which may pose privacy risks. Without proper
protection measures, this data could be misused or exploited for commercial purposes without
the consent of users.
Limitations in Emotional Support and Human Interaction
Although AI can assist with learning, it lacks the emotional intelligence and understanding that
humans have. AI feedback is automated and lacks empathy or nuance in communication. Timms
(2016) emphasized that emotional support from teachers is crucial in motivating and engaging
students, a role AI is not yet capable of replacing [15].
Moreover, the relationship between a teacher and a student is not just about transferring
knowledge; it also involves guidance and attention to individual needs. As Schiff (2020) noted,
“A teacher needs to understand their students” to provide effective support and direction [16]. AI
can provide explanations, but it cannot truly comprehend the needs, challenges, or emotions of
each student like a real teacher can.
Furthermore, excessive reliance on AI can reduce opportunities for students to interact with their
peers and teachers, affecting their social skill development. The learning environment is not only
for acquiring knowledge but also for building relationships, helping students develop both
intellectually and emotionally [17].

5. Suggestions
As we look towards the future of AI in education, it is essential to consider how stakeholders can
collaborate and implement changes to harness AI’s potential while addressing its challenges. This
section will outline recommendations for the government, educational institutions, students, and
teachers to ensure that AI’s integration into education is ethical, effective, and equitable.
For the Government
The development of public policies related to AI in education is still in its early stages, but this is
an area that is likely to grow exponentially in the next decade [18]. Therefore, to foster the
development of AI in education, it is essential to build a diverse and comprehensive ecosystem
with synchronized mechanisms and policies that attract investment, establish AI research centers,
and recruit and train experts in this field.
The government should also establish clear legal frameworks regarding the use of AI in
education, particularly focusing on ethical issues, data security, and privacy. Additionally,
investing in digital technology infrastructure to ensure that all students and teachers have equal
access to AI is crucial. Integrating AI education into the curriculum from an early stage will help
raise awareness and equip the younger generation with the necessary skills to adapt to the
technological advancements of the future.
For Educational Institutions
Educational institutions need to establish clear regulations regarding the use of AI to ensure
academic integrity and fair evaluation. In addition, schools should proactively organize training
programs and workshops to raise awareness of AI among teachers and students, enabling them to
use AI as a supportive tool rather than relying on it completely. Moreover, teaching and
assessment methods should be reformed to encourage critical thinking, information verification,
and creativity, rather than focusing solely on rote memorization.
For Students
Students need to understand that AI, particularly tools like ChatGPT, is a support tool that
expands knowledge and enhances learning skills, not a replacement for personal thinking. When
used correctly, AI can help students search, summarize information quickly, and access multiple
perspectives. To avoid over-reliance on AI, students should combine AI with traditional learning
methods, engage in self-study, discuss with peers and teachers, and participate in clubs or
workshops to gain practical experience. By learning how to use AI wisely, students will not only
achieve better academic results but also develop critical thinking, improve their ability to filter
information, and better prepare for the future.
For Teachers
To educate students on how to use AI responsibly, teachers should actively integrate this
technology into their teaching methods, ensuring that AI supports but does not replace traditional
learning processes. Teachers should also educate students about plagiarism and require them to
submit drafts before submitting final papers to detect any early signs of improper AI usage.
Furthermore, teachers should use plagiarism detection tools to analyze assignments and identify
abnormalities.
To prevent laziness and encourage critical thinking, teachers should design assessments that
require students to participate in group discussions, presentations, or develop their own research
ideas. These types of assessments are harder for AI to replace and will help students develop
independent thinking. Finally, teachers need to emphasize the importance of proper citation and
maintain accuracy in academic writing.

6. Conclusion
In conclusion, AI has already begun to shape the future of education, offering both remarkable
opportunities and considerable challenges. The potential for AI to personalize learning, enhance
educational efficiency, and provide flexible, on-demand access to knowledge is undeniably
transformative. However, the integration of AI into education also raises critical concerns,
including issues of fairness, privacy, and the preservation of human connection in the learning
process.
As AI continues to evolve, it is essential for all stakeholders - governments, educational
institutions, students, and teachers - to collaborate in navigating these opportunities and
challenges. By establishing clear regulations, promoting ethical AI practices, and ensuring
equitable access to technology, we can harness the full potential of AI while mitigating its risks.
Moreover, education systems must adapt to include AI literacy and encourage critical thinking,
ensuring that students develop not only technical skills but also the ability to think independently
and responsibly in an AI-driven world.
Ultimately, AI should be seen as a tool to enhance human potential, not replace it. With the right
approach, AI can help create a more personalized, inclusive, and efficient educational
experience, preparing future generations for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly
changing world.
