Interview Practice

First
Ask the candidate a small talk question.

How are you?

Did you have any difficulty finding the office?

How’s the weather outside today?

Then ask the candidate:

what job they are applying for and what are the job requirements for that position.
Tell us something about yourself.
Does the candidate clearly state the skill or trait at the start of the answer?

Does the candidate give evidence of why he / she has that skill or trait? (Do they
tell a story that demonstrates this?)

Does the candidate relate their story to the job requirements?

*trait = personal characteristic


What skills did you develop at university?
Is the skill clearly stated at the start of the answer?

Is there evidence of the candidate having that skill? (Did the candidate tell a story
about the skill?)

Does the candidate relate the skill to the requirements of the job advertisement?
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Does the candidate provide a clear answer?

Is the answer positive?

Does the candidate talk about a position within the company?

Does the candidate demonstrate that they have done some research on the
company?
What do you know about our company?
Does the candidate provide a clear answer?

Does the candidate demonstrate evidence of research on the company?

Does the candidate match their skills or traits to the company or the company
values?
Who would you consider to be our main competitors?
Does the candidate answer the question clearly?

Does the candidate demonstrate knowledge of the industry?

Does the candidate go into detail about why the other companies are competitors
e.g. what advantages they have or what advantages does the company have.

Does the candidate use the opportunity to demonstrate their own skills which
could help the company become more competitive?
What trends are likely to affect our industry in the next 10 years?

Does the candidate clearly answer the question?

Does the candidate demonstrate knowledge of the industry?

Does the candidate relate their skills or traits to how they can help the company
adapt to the new trends?

Tell me about a time when you took the lead on a project.

Tell me about a time when you solved a problem.

Tell me about a time when you had to work with someone you didn’t like.

Does the candidate tell a specific story? Is it in past tense? Do they follow the SAR
structure (pay attention to the R part!)? Does the candidate show concrete
evidence of the result?
Do you have any questions you’d like to ask us?
Does the candidate have a prepared question?

Is the question appropriate?
