ITEM 1: Numerical Concept 1–Indices and Standard Form.

A telecom tower transmits signals across several regions. The number

of daily signal packets is estimated as 2.4 × 108. Each signal packet is
made of 6 × 104 bytes. The tower also consumes energy modeled by the
expression 34 × 32 ÷ 33 kilojoules per signal group.

TASK;
a) Express the total number of bytes transmitted daily in standard form.
b) Simplify the energy expression and write your answer using indices.
c) A technician records a backup file of size 0.000024 terabytes.
Express the size in standard form.
d) A control centre receives data every 15 minutes. How many packets
are received per second (assume 24 hrs in a day)? Give your answer in
standard form.
e) Justify whether 53 or 34 is greater in value and explain using
exponential laws.
ITEM 2: Integrated Problem Solving – Algebra, Inequalities, Indices.

A company is producing cylindrical water tanks. The volume of each

tank is given by

V = πr2h with r = x and h = x + 2. The company uses steel sheets with

cost modeled as: C(x) = 2x2 + 3x - 5. However, the total cost must not
exceed UGX 500,000, and the tank must hold at least 1,000 litres
(1m3 = 1,000 L). Assume π = 3.14.

a) Express the volume in terms of x, and simplify.

b) Express the total cost inequality and represent C(x) ≤ 500,000
graphically.
c) Using substitution, find values of x that give tank volumes greater
than or equal to 1 m3.
d) If x = 5, calculate the cost and volume. Is this acceptable?

ITEM ONE: Inequalities and Regions

A farmer is planting maize (x kg) and beans (y kg) on her land. The land
can hold at most 100 kg of crops, and each crop must weigh at least 10
kg.
The farmer wants:
- Total crop weight: x + y ≤ 100
- At least 30 kg of maize.
- Not more than 60 kg of beans.

Task;
a) Write three inequalities to represent the situation.
b) Draw the graph of the inequalities on the Cartesian plane and shade
the feasible region.
c) Determine whether the point (40,50) lies in the feasible region.
Justify.
d) If the profit per kg is UGX 2,000 for maize and UGX 3,000 for beans,
formulate an expression for total profit.
e) Determine the most profitable combination of crops the farmer can
grow. Support your answer.
ITEM 2: Algebra 2 – Expansion, Perfect Squares & Quadratics.

A school is constructing square tiles for its science lab. The length of
each tile’s side is (x + 3) cm. The school wants to Calculate the area of
each tile and model the cost function as C(x) = 2(x + 3)2 + 5(x - 1).

Task; a) Expand the expression for the area of the tile.

b) Simplify the cost function C(x).
c) Show whether the area expression is a perfect square.
d) Factorize x2 + 5x + 6.
e) A learner drops an object from a height modeled by the equation

h = x2 - 6x + 8. Find the value(s) of x when the object hits the ground.

e) Write your recommendation to the company: what value of x should

they use to meet both constraints?

The cost function given is C(x) = 2x^2 + 3x - 5. The inequality for total cost is 2x^2 + 3x - 5 ≤ 500,000. To graph this, plot y = 2x^2 + 3x - 5 and y = 500,000 to determine the feasible region .

To compare 5^3 and 3^4, compute them: 5^3 = 125 and 3^4 = 81. Thus, 5^3 is greater than 3^4 because 125 > 81 .

The backup file size is 0.000024 terabytes. To express it in standard form, 0.000024 becomes 2.4 × 10^-5 terabytes .

To express the total number of bytes transmitted daily in standard form, first calculate the daily signal packets which is given as 2.4 × 10^8 and each packet is 6 × 10^4 bytes. Therefore, the total bytes = 2.4 × 10^8 × 6 × 10^4 = 14.4 × 10^12. In standard form, this is 1.44 × 10^13 .

The energy consumed by the tower is modeled by 34 × 32 ÷ 33. Using index laws: 34 × 32 ÷ 33 = 34+2−3 = 33, which simplifies to 27 kilojoules .

For x = 5, volume V = πx^2(x+2) = 3.14 * 5^2(5+2) = 549.5, below 1m³, so unacceptable. Cost C(5) = 2(5)^2 + 3(5) - 5 = 50 + 15 - 5 = 60,000, fitting budget but volume fails .

The control centre receives data every 15 minutes. Therefore, packets per day = 96 intervals (as there are 24 hours * 60 minutes / 15 minutes). Given 2.4 × 10^8 total packets daily, packets per second = 2.4 × 10^8 / 86400 ≈ 2.78 × 10^3 in standard form .

The volume V is given by V = πx^2h = πx(x+2). Setting V ≥ 1 and using π = 3.14 gives us x^2(x+2) ≥ 1/3.14. Solving x = 1 satisfies the condition upon substitution .

The inequalities are: 1) x + y ≤ 100 (total crop weight); 2) x ≥ 30 (at least 30 kg of maize); 3) y ≤ 60 (not more than 60 kg of beans).

Substituting (40, 50) into the inequalities: 40 + 50 = 90 ≤ 100 (satisfied); 40 ≥ 30 (satisfied); 50 ≤ 60 (satisfied). Thus, (40, 50) lies within the feasible region .
