🌐 Strand 1: Introduction to Computers
What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic device that receives data (input), processes it, stores it,
and produces results (output).
🧩 Basic Functions of a Computer:
Input – Entering data (e.g., typing using a keyboard).
Processing – The computer works on the data (done by the CPU).
Storage – Saving data (e.g., on a hard disk or flash drive).
Output – Getting the results (e.g., displayed on the monitor or printed).
🧠 Main Parts of a Computer:
Part Function
Monitor Displays what you are doing (like a TV).
Keyboard Used to type letters, numbers, and symbols.
Mouse Helps you to click and select items.
CPU The brain of the computer; processes data.
Printer Produces a hard copy of your work.
Speakers Produces sound.
Strand 2: Operating a Computer
🔌 How to Start a Computer:
Switch on the power source.
Turn on the CPU and monitor.
Wait for it to load (boot).
Use the mouse to click and start working.
🔒 How to Shut Down Safely:
Click on the “Start” button.
Select “Shut Down.”
Wait for the computer to turn off.
Turn off the monitor and the power source.

💡 What is Word Processing?
Word processing is the use of a computer program (like Microsoft Word) to write,
edit, and print documents.
✍️Activities You Can Do in MS Word:
Type letters, poems, or stories.
Change font style and size.
Bold, underline, and italicize text.
Save and print your work.
🧰 Basic Tools in MS Word:
Tool Use
Font Changes the look of text
Bold (B) Makes words darker and thicker
Italic (I) Slants the text to the right
Underline (U) Adds a line under the text
Save Keeps your work safe
Print Produces a paper copy of your document

🌐 What is the Internet?
The internet is a large network that connects computers around the world. It helps
us:
Find information.
Communicate using email.
Watch videos and learn.
📧 What is an Email?
An email (electronic mail) is a message sent through the internet to another person
using a computer or phone.
Common Email Providers:
Gmail
Yahoo
Outlook
Strand 5: Digital Safety
🚨 Staying Safe Online:
Don’t share your passwords.
Don’t talk to strangers online.
Always ask an adult before using a new website.
Report any bad or scary messages to your teacher or parent.

Cyberbullying is when someone is mean to others online. Always:
Be kind online.
Report bullies.
Never share mean or hurtful messages.
📱 Strand 6: Devices and their Uses
Types of Digital Devices:
Device Use
Computer For typing, playing games, internet
Tablet Used in schools and homes for learning
Smartphone For communication and apps
Projector For showing big images in class

1. Mouse
The Computer Mouse – Use and Care
This is to inform all students and computer users about the proper use and care of
the computer mouse.
The mouse is an essential input device that helps you interact with the computer by
pointing, clicking, selecting, and dragging items on the screen. It usually has two
buttons (left and right) and a scroll wheel in the center.
🔹 Usage Guidelines:
Use the left button to click, select, or open files.
Use the right button to access additional options or context menus.
Scroll with the wheel to move up or down pages easily.
Always handle the mouse gently and keep it on a flat surface for smooth
movement.
🔹 Care Instructions:
Do not drop or apply force to the mouse.
Keep the mouse clean and free from dust.
If using a wireless mouse, ensure batteries are working and replaced when needed.
Report any issues with the mouse to the lab assistant or teacher.
Types of Mice:
Wired or wireless
Optical or laser
Basic Parts:
Left button – for selecting or clicking
Right button – for opening context menus
Scroll wheel – for scrolling up and down
Basic Mouse Actions:
Click – Press the left button once to select items.
Double-click – Quickly press the left button twice to open files or folders.
Right-click – Press the right button to open a menu of options.
Scroll – Roll the wheel to move up or down a page.
Drag and Drop – Click and hold the left button, move the mouse to drag items,
then release to drop.
Pointer Movement:
Move the mouse on a flat surface to control the pointer on the screen.
⌨️Using a Keyboard
Types of Keys:
Alphabet keys (A–Z) – For typing letters
Number keys (0–9) – For typing numbers
Function keys (F1–F12) – Perform special actions
Navigation keys – Arrows, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down
Control keys – Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Esc
Typing keys – Spacebar, Enter, Backspace, Tab
Common Keyboard Actions:
Typing – Press keys to enter letters, numbers, or symbols.
Enter – Confirms a command or moves to a new line.
Backspace – Deletes characters to the left.
Delete – Removes text or items to the right.
Shift – Hold to type capital letters or symbols.
Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V – Copy and paste
Ctrl + Z / Ctrl + Y – Undo and redo
Alt + Tab – Switch between open windows
Typing Tips:
Keep fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;).
Use both hands for efficiency.
Practice to improve speed and accuracy.
