Installing your storage system
Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform One Block 20 (VSP One Block 20) storage systems are designed for self-
installation, so you can install and set up your storage system for the first time without assistance from a
Hitachi Vantara representative.
Site preparation
Before you install the storage system, make sure your data center meets all site preparation
requirements as specified in the VSP One Block Hardware Guide.
Rack
If you are not using a Hitachi Universal Rack, make sure the electrical specifications of your rack meet
the power requirements of the storage system as specified in the VSP One Block Hardware Guide.
Tools, equipment, and personnel
The following items are required for storage system installation:
Screwdriver with PZ-2 head. A Phillips screwdriver is also acceptable.
2 units of available rack space with power supply
2 people to lift and rack the storage system
Management PC
For hardware, software, and web browser requirements for the management PC, see
Requirements for the management PC.
Step 1: Unpack the storage system
1. Inspect all materials for signs of damage. If you see damage, discontinue the installation and contact
your Hitachi Vantara representative.
2. Open all boxes. Remove all packing materials, envelopes, and boxes from the cartons.
3. Retain all packing materials in case you need to transport the storage system.
4. Check the items you received against the packing list. If any items are missing or damaged, discontinue
the installation and contact your Hitachi Vantara representative.
5. Check the labels on the controller chassis and drive box, and verify the location of each component on
the rack layout diagram.
6. Place the keys for the bezel in a safe place. You will need them to attach the bezel to the controller
chassis.
Install the storage system into the rack.
Step 2: Install the storage system into the rack
Install the storage system into the Hitachi Universal Rack or into a 4-post EIA 310-D compliant 19-inch rack
with square mounting holes and rear-facing power distribution units (PDUs).
Note:The rail kit comes with pins that fit racks with square or circular shaped holes. Use the correct pin type for
your rack.

7/12/25, 9:36 PM Virtual Storage Platform One Block 20 Installation Guide
Note:The NVMe cable consists of a pair of cables attached to connectors. Be careful not to pass another cable
between the two NVMe cables in the pair.
Before wiring NVMe cables, unwind, stretch and untwist them. If they twist while wiring, untwist and
wire them.
1. Choose corresponding color-coded labels among the color codes that come with the controller and
drive box.
The cable color-coded labels help you connect the cables correctly. Numbers printed on the labels are
supplemental information.
2. Attach color-coded labels to the NVMe cables (same color for IN and OUT).

To establish power redundancy for the storage system, route each power supply to independent PDUs and
route the PDUs to separate external power sources on different branch circuits.
1. Confirm that the PDU breakers are turned off.
2. Insert the power cable plug completely into the receptacle on each power supply.
3. Fix the power cable holder to the power cables.
4. For the drive box, correct the twisted power cable and fix it to the rail with omega clips.
5. Insert the power cable plug for power supply 1 into the PDU, and insert the power cable for power
supply 2 into the opposite side of the rack to provide redundant power for the storage system.
Connect from J101 to J103 and from J201 to J203 sequentially. Confirm that the power cable is firmly
fixed to the rack with the PDU cable clamp or repeat binders.
6. Route the power cables.
a. Route the PDU power cables through the cable passing opening at the bottom of the rack.
b. Remove the cable holders from the rack frame by removing the hex socket head bolts.
c. Fasten the power cables to the rack frame by attaching the cable holders with the Allen bolts.
d. Check that the connectors are securely fixed after the assembly work.
