, Chapter: Human Reproduction - Summary

1. Introduction

• Humans are sexually reproducing , viviparous organisms.

• Involves gametogenesis, insemination , fertilization , implantation,

pregnancy, and parturition .

"' 2. Male Reproductive System

Main Parts:

1. Testes (2)

o Located in scrotum, outside abdominal cavity for lower

tern perature.

o Each testis has seminiferous tubules (site of spermatogenesis) .

o Interstitial cells (Leydig cells) produce testosterone .

2. Epididymis

o Site of sperm maturation and storage

3. Vas deferens and ejaculatory duct

o Transport sperm from epididymis to urethra

4 . Urethra

o Common passage for urine and semen

5. Penis

o External organ for sperm delivery

6. Accessory Glands:

o Seminal vesicles: 60% of semen, rich in fructose

o Prostate gland : Secretes milky flu id

0 Bulbourethral (Cowper's) glands: Lubricates urethra

;I' Diagram : Male reprod uctive system

"' 3. Female Reproductive System

Main Parts:

1 . Ovaries (2)

o Produce ova, estrogen, and progesterone

o Co ntains follicles at different stages

2 . Fallopian tubes (oviducts)

0 lnfundibulum, ampulla (site of fertilization ), isthmus

3. Uterus (womb)

o Musc ular organ for implantation, embryo development

4. Cervix - opening of uterus

5. Vagina - receives sperm, birth ca nal

;I' Diagram : Female reprodu c ti ve system

... 4. Gametogenesis

a. Spermatogenesis (in testes)

• Begins at puberty under influence of FSH & LH

• Spermatogonia (2n) -> Primary spermatocyte -> Meiosis I ->

Secondary spermatocytes-> Meiosis II-> Spermatids->
Spermatozoa

• Take s ~ 64 days

Structure of Sperm:

• Head : Nucleu s + Acro some (enzymes)

• Middle piece: Mitochondria

• Tail : Motility

;? Diagram : Structure of sperm

b. Oogenesis (in ovaries)

• Begins in fetal life-> primary oocytes arrested in Prophase I

• Puberty: One oocyte matures every month

• Primary oocyte (2n)-> Secondary oocyte (n) + Polar body-> Ovum

(after fertili zation)
., 5. Menstrual Cycle

• Cyclical changes (~28 days) in female reproductive system

• Phases:

a. Menstrual phase (Day 1-5): Shedding of endometrium

b . Follicular phase (Day 6- 13): Follicle matures, estrogen r

c . Ovulation (Day 14) : LH surge, release of ovum

d. Luteal phase (Day 15- 28) : Corpus luteum _. progesterone

/ Diagram : Menstrual cycle graph (hormonal and uterine changes)

"' 6. Fertilization

• Fusion of sperm + ovum in ampulla of oviduct

• Restores diploid chromosome number (2n = 46)

• Zygote _.cleavage_. morula _. blastocyst

/ Diagram : Fertilization and development stages

~ 7. Implantation

• Blastocyst embeds into uterine wall (endometrium) ~ 7 days after

fertilization
"' 8. Pregnancy and Placenta

• Placenta: Temporary organ, exchange of nutrients, gases, wastes

• Secretes hCG, hPL, estrogen, progesterone

"' 9. Embryonic Development

• Gastrulation : Formation of 3 germ layers

• Organogenesis begins

• Amnion protects embryo, chorion forms part of placenta

6-. 10. Parturition (Childbirth)

• Initiated by uterine contractions, oxytocin

• Involves dilation, expulsion, afterbirth stages

"' 11. Lactation

• Mammary glands produce colostrum: Rich in antibodies (lgA)

• Stimulated by prolactin and oxytocin
