A tournament is a series of competitions where players or teams compete to fnd the ultimate winner. It helps in judging the performance level,
selecting the best players, and building sportsmanship.
Types of Tournaments:
1.
Knockout Tournament – In this type, a team is eliminated after one loss. It's time-saving and economical.
2.
League Tournament – Every team plays with all other teams. It’s fairer but time-consuming.
3.
Combination Tournament – A mix of league and knockout formats. Useful for large events.
4.
Challenge Tournament – A match where the winner keeps playing with new challengers.
Q2. What is seeding in fxture for tournaments? Explain the procedure for giving bye
Seeding is the process of placing the top-ranked teams in fxtures in such a way that they don’t meet each other in early rounds. It ensures fair
play and competitive fnals.
Byes are given when the number of teams is not a power of 2 (e.g. 5, 6, 10). The formula used is:
Number of Byes = Next power of 2 – Total teams
Byes are placed in the frst round and are distributed evenly from top to bottom of the fxture.
Q3. What do you mean by Double League Tournament and Single League
Tournament? Explain formulas.
In a Single League Tournament, each team plays once with every other team.
Formula: Total matches = n(n-1)/2, where n = number of teams.
In a Double League Tournament, each team plays two matches (home and away) with every other team.
Formula: Total matches = n(n-1)
These tournaments are more accurate in determining the best team but take more time.
Q4. Explain the cyclic and staircase method of league tournament. Draw the fxture of
both methods (6 teams).
Cyclic Method: Teams are fxed in a circle. One team remains fxed and others rotate clockwise.
Staircase Method: Fixtures are created in a step-like pattern where the frst team plays with all others in order.
Fixtures for 6 teams:
(Can be drawn in tabular format – I can help draw them in your notebook format if needed.)
Q5. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of knockout tournament.
Advantages:
Time-saving and fewer matches.
Cost-effective for organizers.

Disadvantages:
A strong team can be eliminated early.
Fewer chances for each team to perform.
Not suitable for talent identifcation.
Q6. Briefy mention the advantages and disadvantages of league tournament.
Advantages:
Every team gets to play multiple matches.

Reception Committee welcomes guests and players.
Technical Committee ensures rules are followed.
Refreshment Committee provides food and drinks.
Post-Tournament:
Ceremony Committee manages the prize distribution.
Record Committee prepares reports and results.

Q9. What do you know about knockout tournament? Draw the fxtures of 21 teams on
knockout basis.
A knockout tournament is one where a team is eliminated after losing one match. Only the winners progress to the next round until one winner
remains.
Fixture for 21 Teams:
Next power of 2 = 32
Number of matches = 21 - 1 = 20
Number of byes = 32 - 21 = 11
(Draw a bracket showing 21 teams, with 11 byes placed in the frst round.)
Q10. What do you mean by combination tournament? Write the procedure to draw
fxture in combination tournament (4 teams each).
Combination Tournament is a mix of two formats – usually league + knockout or vice versa.
Procedure (e.g., 4 groups of 4 teams):
First, hold league matches within each group using n(n-1)/2 formula.
Then top 1 or 2 teams from each group qualify for the knockout round.
Knockout fxture is then drawn for the qualifying teams.
