Science 7 - Lesson: Matter, Pure Substances, Elements, and Compounds
🧪 What is Matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Everything around us is made of matter — the air we breathe, the food we eat, even YOU!
✨ Two Main Types of Matter:
1. Pure Substances
2. Mixtures (not discussed in this lesson)
🔬 Pure Substances
A pure substance is made up of only one kind of particle. It has a definite
composition and cannot be separated by physical means.
There are 2 types of pure substances:
1. Elements
2. Compounds
🌟 Elements
An element is the simplest form of matter.
It cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Made of only one kind of atom.
Found on the Periodic Table of Elements.
🧲 Examples of Elements:
Oxygen (O)
Hydrogen (H)
Iron (Fe)
Gold (Au)
⚗️Compounds
A compound is made of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Compounds have a new set of properties different from the elements that make
them up.
They can only be broken down by chemical means.
🧪 Examples of Compounds:
Water (H₂O) – made of hydrogen and oxygen
Salt (NaCl) – made of sodium and chlorine
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) – made of carbon and oxygen
📚 Remember!
All elements and compounds are pure substances.
Elements are basic building blocks of matter.
Compounds are combinations of elements.
