Spatial Perception

Sketch
Surfaces
The geometric shape of the atrium with multiple levels create a mundane
space, with a lack of any strong visual contrast. The use of ad banners and
vendor stalls fight for the users attention.
Edges
The sharp edges of the concrete walls and floors create a contrast with the
cylindrical edges of the large columns, creating a slight visual tension.
Scale
The columns are at huge scale with respect to a human, thus create
a sense of awe. The high ceiling for the topmost level add onto this
sense of awe & admiration.
Hierarchy Lowest Highest
The long cylindrical columns grabs the most attention followed
by the large square cinema entrance and then the huge hanging
banner in the middle.
Grouping & Proximity
Long columns, hanging conical lanterns, huge advertisement screens create
groups in themselves (represented through grouping by colour) through
proximity, similarity and position.
Foreground & Background Foreground
The long cylindrical pillars are in the foreground with a focus on the huge Focus
cinema entrance and the long hanging banner, with everything else being in Background
the background of the space.
Patterns
The long cylindrical pillars create a pattern along with the hanging conical
lanterns. This pattern is broken by the rectangular banners and
advertisement boards.
Volumes & Shape
The long columns are cylindrical in shape with more columns sprouted from its top ends. Comparatively
smaller conical shaped hanging lantern mimics the conical shapes of the tree like head of the pillars, but are in
inverted positions. The advertisement banners and display boards are in rectangular or square shaped.
Symmetry
Along with the evident bilateral symmetry of the atrium, there is also a not so apparent spatial geometry
through volumes. The conical head formation of the pillars are in symmetry (along a horiontal axis) with the
hanging conical lanterns.
Articulation
Visual Contrast and Scale
The interplay between sharp-edged concrete walls and cylindrical columns introduces subtle tension. The
towering columns, along with the high ceiling, evoke awe, serving as focal points, followed by the cinema
entrance and central banners.
Symmetry and Repetition
Bilateral symmetry is apparent with repeating cylindrical columns and hanging conical lanterns, creating a
rhythmic pattern. This symmetry is disrupted by rectangular ad banners, providing visual breaks. Proximity
and similarity of elements, like grouped columns and lanterns, create cohesive visual clusters.
