What is a constitution Constitution?

A constitution is a written set of rules that tells how a
country should be governed.

Why is it Important?
• It defines rules for government.
• Protects rights of citizens.
• Limits the power of leaders.
• Makes sure everyone is treated equally.

Example:
Imagine playing cricket without any rules. Everyone will
fight. A constitution is like the rulebook that keeps
order.

🌟 2. The South African Story

What Happened in South Africa?

• For many years, white rulers followed Apartheid (a
policy that separated blacks and whites).
• Black people were not allowed in:

injustice.
• After years of struggle, Apartheid ended in 1994.

New Constitution:
• Leaders of all races sat together.
• They made a constitution giving equal rights to
everyone.

India Became Independent:

• On 15 August 1947, India got freedom from British
rule.

Making the Constitution:
• A group called the Constituent Assembly was
formed in December 1946.
• Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the Chairman of the

• Came into force on 26 January 1950 (Republic
Day).

poor

• Democratic – People elect their leaders
• Republic – Head of State (President) is elected, not
a king
It promises:
• Justice
• Liberty
• Equality
• Fraternity (brotherhood)

🌟 5. Institutional Design

The Constitution tells how government will work:

If a law is unfair, the Supreme Court can cancel it.
