CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE OUTLINE

BOLTED STEEL WATER STORAGE TANK
RPL SERIES Tank - Using Jacking System
Intent
Tank Industries has prepared this Construction procedure to outline activities, responsibilities and conduct of
our installers on site.

Scope
Construction of rectangular panel bolted steel water storage tanks onto pre-prepared foundations, using a
purpose design & built hydraulic jacking system.
All tank installation activities are done at ground level including assembly of all ladders, connections, roof
structure fitting and hanging of all liners.

Description of Tank Installation Methodology

The tank is constructed using the hydraulic jacking system to lift the previously installed assembly to a full
strake height. RP wall panels are installed at this new level in a sequential manner around the circumference of
the tank. This newly formed panel strake is attached to the upper previous assembly.
Construction begins with the assembly of the top strake, roof structure, roof sheeting and top platform/hatch.
The roof structure and sheeting are assembled with installers on the ground. Strake height is 1200mm off the
ground.
Once the pre-jacking assembly is complete, the hydraulic jacking system is attached and tank lifted to the
height for the next panel installation to proceed.
This creates a full panel clear opening under the pre-installed portion of tank.
Tank liner is rolled out and attached to the inside of the top hoop while at ground level.
Staybars for the top strake are then fitted.
Next strake wall panels are then installed after jacking.
The tank has a rectangular panel hatch positioned in the final stake for installers to exit from when assembling
the final strake.
Upon exit, the final panel is fitted to complete the last strake.
Next strake wall panels are installed and the process is repeated until assembly reaches full height.
All work is performed with installers at ground level, hence no working at height.
There is no welding or gases introduced during assembly. All items are bolted together.
As the tank is being assembled it is not deemed as a confined space.
Installers can walk freely between the inside & outside of tank.
When fully assembled and on the ground, the top access hatch and bottom lower manhole are open to create
natural air flow within the tank.
With a large air volume contained within the tank which is being continuously vented, allows installers to more
freely within and for them to work without hindrance.
The bottom lower manhole is used by installers to gain entry and exit from within the tank.
The installer simply steps through the opening without being hindered or obstructed.
Connections are then bolt assembled and Sikaflex is used to seal them against tank wall. Sikaflex does not give
off any fumes when curing.
The liner is checked and curtain correctly positioned before exiting tank.
Tank is anchored to concrete foundation.
Manhole hatch is locked up and tank is ready to be handed over.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Foundation imperfections, such as level variations or non-smooth transitions, can lead to significant issues affecting the tank's quality and performance. These imperfections might cause an uneven load distribution, leading to structural instability. Tank Industries addresses these issues by inspecting the foundation before installation commencement. If the foundation does not meet the required standards, the installation does not proceed until corrections are made. This proactive approach ensures a stable foundation, crucial for the tank’s stability and functionality .

Tank Industries manages component delivery by utilizing local cartage contractors to transport component pallets to the site. Components are palletized and shrink-wrapped to protect them from the weather. This logistical management facilitates ease of handling and ensures the materials are in optimal condition for installation. Site preparation involves ensuring amenities and power access for installers, along with maintaining clear, accessible working areas. By streamlining logistics and emphasizing comprehensive site preparation, Tank Industries optimizes the efficiency and efficacy of the installation process .

Tank Industries ensures site safety by requiring all installers to complete a course on Occupational Safety & Health Induction and to carry ‘General Induction’ cards. The installers must wear appropriate PPE such as safety helmets, footwear, and eye protection. Running on site is prohibited, and installers must conduct themselves safely. The company also emphasizes maintaining a clean work environment, where all waste must be disposed of properly. These actions, combined with a commitment to adherence to safety rules and regulations, significantly enhance site safety during tank installation .

The hydraulic jacking system plays a critical role in the installation of bolted steel water storage tanks by allowing sequential assembly at ground level, significantly enhancing safety by minimizing work at heights. It facilitates the precise lifting required for attaching wall panels in an orderly manner and enables installers to perform installations without confined space constraints. By ensuring accuracy and safety, the hydraulic jacking system ensures the efficient and error-free assembly of the tanks, underscoring its importance in modern structural installation practices .

During tank installation, careful consideration must be given to the appropriate safety equipment, including helmets, safety footwear, eye and hearing protection, and gloves. The use of this equipment is mandatory to protect installers from potential hazards such as falling objects, sharp edges, and noise exposure. These measures reduce the risk of accidents, thus significantly impacting the overall safety of the project. Mandatory adherence to safety gear usage fosters a culture of safety, ensuring project operations proceed without incident and maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations .

Installers ensure structural integrity by adhering to precise installation methods and quality assurance checks. They use galvanized materials to prevent corrosion and ensure all elements are bolted firmly. During installation, hydraulic jacking systems are employed to maintain even load distribution. Post-installation, the tank is anchored to a properly leveled foundation to provide stability. In addition, Sikaflex sealant is used to ensure tight, impermeable joints free from harmful emissions, further preserving the tank's structural integrity over time .

Tank Industries' tank installers are responsible for familiarizing themselves with safety rules, maintaining their work areas, and ensuring professional conduct on site. They report to the project manager and are accountable for following the outlined construction procedures. Their responsibilities include erecting the tank, inspecting the foundation, and ensuring all components are installed correctly. These responsibilities are crucial as they ensure the installation is performed safely, efficiently, and up to industry standards, ultimately impacting the longevity and performance of the tank .

Tank Industries uses a hydraulic jacking system for installing bolted steel water storage tanks. The key steps involve assembling all components at ground level, including ladders, roof structures, and hanging liners. The process starts with assembly of the top strake and roof structure on the ground. The hydraulic jacking system then elevates the assembly to allow installation of RP wall panels sequentially around the tank's circumference. This sequential lifting and panel attachment continue until the tank reaches full height. The methodology eliminates the need for welding or working at heights and uses bolting to secure components, promoting safety and ease of installation .

Tank Industries incorporates environmental considerations by minimizing welding and opting for bolting to assemble tanks, which reduces emissions and eliminates the need for gases. Sikaflex sealant, which does not emit fumes during curing, is used, further reducing environmental impact. Additionally, by managing waste responsibly through proper disposal methods and using durable, corrosion-resistant materials, the company minimizes environmental footprint while ensuring the tanks' longevity and reduced maintenance needs .

Tank Industries' installation method using a hydraulic jacking system differs significantly from traditional methods by bolting rather than welding, thus eliminating the need for gases that traditional methods might require. This method allows all work to be conducted at ground level, reducing safety risks associated with working at heights. The method also prevents the emission of toxic fumes, as adhesives like Sikaflex do not release fumes during curing, minimizing environmental impact. As such, the installation is safer and more environmentally friendly compared to traditional methods .
