 INTRODUCTION
This module is written in support of the K to 12 Basic Education Program to
ensure the attainment of standards expected of you as a learner.

This aims to equip you with essential knowledge on ICT and WEB.
This includes the following activities/tasks:

ICT(Information and Communications Technology)

▪ is an umbrella term that
includes any communication device or application,
encompassing: radio, TV, cellular phones, computer
and network hardware and software, satellite systems,
and so on, as well as the various services and
applications associated with them, such as
videoconferencing and distance learning.

ICT in the Philippines

- Philippines is dub as the ‘’ICT Hub of Asia” because of the huge
growth of ICT-related jobs, one of which is BPO, Business Process
Outsourcing, or call centers.
- ICT Department in the Philippines is responsible for the planning,
development, and promotion of the country’s information and
communications technology (ICT) agenda in support of national
development.

How ICT affects people and shape their daily lives?

• When we make a video call, we use the internet.
• When we send a text or make a call, we use cellular networks.
• When we run out of load or battery, we use payphones that use a telephone
network.
• In economics, … ICT has saved companies a lot of resources (time and
money) with the kind of communication technology they use, nowadays.
• Similarly, we spend less because of ICT.

Sample ICT Works

Ethernet – simply refers to the most
common type of Local Area Network (LAN)
used today. A LAN is a connected network
of computers in a small area, like your office,
college campus, or even home. (See image
below)
 BPO (Business Process Outsourcing)
BPO or Business Process Outsourcing is one
of the instances of IT-enabled services or IT-
based services in the country.

Software Development
Software development is the process of
conceiving, specifying, designing,
programming, documenting, testing, and bug
fixing involved in creating and maintaining
applications, frameworks, or other software
components.

The WEB
The Web, or World Wide Web, is a
system of Internet servers that support
specially formatted [Link]

Language) that supports links to other
documents, as well as graphics, audio, and
video files.

Brief History of the Web.

In 1989, a British scientist named Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee invented
the Web.

By October of 1990, Tim had written the three fundamental technologies (HTML,
URL/URI, HTTP) that remain the foundation of today’s web (and which you may
have seen appear on parts of your web browser). These three together are known as
the WEB. In 1990, there is already an Internet.

• HTML: HyperText Markup Language. The markup

(formatting) language for the web.

• URI: Uniform Resource Identifier. A kind of “address” is unique and used to

a website and displayed to a user in a web
browser. A website typically consists of
many web pages linked together

 EVOLUTION OF WEB
1. Web 1.0 (static web pages)
Web 1.0 is the term used to refer to the first stage of development on
the World Wide Web that was characterized by simple static websites.
It is the “readable” phrase of the World Wide Web with flat data.
The website spoke to website visitors, provide information, and it’s one-
way communication.
Static pages: Pages didn’t offer interactive features that changed
based on website visitor behavior. At that point, websites were largely
informational.

2. Web 2.0 (dynamic web pages)

It’s a simply improved version of the first worldwide web, characterized
specifically by the change from static to dynamic or user-generated content
and also the growth of social media.
It is the “writable” phrase of the World Wide Web with interactive
[Link] Web 1.0, Web 2.0 facilitates interaction between web users and
sites, so it allows users to interact more freely with each other.
Web 2.0 examples include hosted services (Google Maps),Web
applications ( Google Docs, Flickr), Video sharing sites (YouTube), wikis
(MediaWiki), blogs (WordPress), social networking (Facebook), folksonomies
(Delicious), Microblogging (Twitter), podcasting (Podcast Alley) & content
hosting services and many more.
Dynamic Web Pages– web 2.0 is the evolution of web 1.0 by adding
dynamic web pages. The user can see websites differently than others e.g.
social networking sites, wikis, video sharing sites.

Wiki - a website that allows collaborative editing of its content and structure

Flickr - (pronounced "flicker") is an image hosting and video hosting website
and web services suite that was created by Ludicorp in 2004 and acquired
by Yahoo in 2005.
Blogs - is a website consisting of entries (also called posts) appearing in
reverse chronological order with the most recent entry appearing first (similar
in format to a daily journal).

FEATURES OF WEB 2.0

1. Folksonomy- allows users to categorize and classify information using

freely chosen keywords e.g. tagging by FB, Twitter, use tags that start with
the sign #, referred to as the hashtag.
2. Rich User Experience – content is dynamic and is responsive to the user’s
input
3. User Participation- The owner of the website is not the only one who can
put content. Others can place the content of their own through comments,
reviews, and evaluation e.g. Lazada, Amazon.
4. Long Tail– services that are offered on-demand rather than on a one-time
purchase. This is synonymous with subscribing to a data plan that charges
you for the amount of time you spent on the internet.
5. Software as a service- users will be subscribed to software only when
needed rather than purchasing them e.g. Google docs used to create and
edit word processing and spreadsheet.
6. Mass Participation– diverse information sharing through universal web
access. Web 2.0’s content is based on people from various cultures.

3. Web 3.0 (semantic web)

Web 3.0 is referred to as an intelligent web or third generation of internet-based
services. The term was coined by John Markoff in 2006. He explained “There is no easy
consensus about how to define what is meant by Web 3.0, but it is generally seen as a
reference to the semantic Web.
 It is the “executable” phrase of the World Wide Web with dynamic
applications, interactive services, and “machine-to-machine” interaction. In Web 3.0,
computers can interpret information like humans and intelligently generate and
distribute useful content tailored to the needs of users.
So Web 3.0 is the idea of such a web that will store information in such a way
that computers and other devices will understand on their [Link] app and Google
Voice search, Apple’s Siri are some of the examples of web 3.o usage.
Semantic Web
The Semantic Web is a vision about an extension of the existing World Wide
Web, which provides software programs with machine-interpretable metadata of the
published information and data. In other words, we add further data descriptors to
otherwise existing content and data on the Web. As a result, computers can make
meaningful interpretations similar to the way humans process information to achieve
their goals.
