Group tasks
1. Define the following terms:
i. Language
ii. Language development

2. With the aid of practical examples, briefly explain how you can use the following
concepts to encourage development of good language skills:
i. Imitation
ii. Reinforcement.
iii. Punishment
iv. Extinction
3. Using any five practical examples, explain how you can create a ‘conducive’ learning
environment for the development of good language skills.

Play a video on stages of language development (can be downloaded from


YouTube) and answer the questions below:
4. Identify the milestones (stages) of language development. What does this video tell you
about the process of language development among human beings?
5. Think of babies who are at the first stage (the babbling stage) of language development.
Suggest where they could have learnt the ‘babbling’ sound.
6. How important is the environment in facilitating language development among children
in this video?
7. To what extent are biological factors important in promoting language development
among children?
