Chapter-02 Assignment

Power Regulation
Note: Questions must be copied compulsorily in the assignment sheet.
1. From the following data of the flow at a given area for an average year. Compute and
draw the power duration curve. Assume an average available net head of 50m and
combined efficiency of 85%. Determine primary and secondary energy available during
a year if the plant capacity is fixed at power corresponding to the flow available for
70% of time exceedance. [10 marks, modified from 2021 Final]
Flow (m3/s) 900 600 500 450 400 350 340 300 280 200 140 100
% time 1 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 93 100

2. Calculate total energy production and total revenue generated from a ROR type
hydropower project of gross head 200m constructed in Sunkoshi river taking design
discharge corresponding to 50% of time of exceedance having long term mean monthly
flows (m3/s) at the dam site from January to December are 6.0, 4.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.5, 20.0,
35.0, 55.0, 30.0, 15.0, 8.0 and 7.0 respectively. Take conveyance efficiency, turbine
efficiency, generator efficiency and transmission losses of the project are 90%, 95%,
99% and 12% respectively. Also consider minimum downstream release of 0.3m3/s and
average energy sale rate up for the project in Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is NRs
5.50 per unit.

3. A mean monthly flow in m /sec is shown below:
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
100 120 140 300 350 1800 2000 2520 2000 900 650 500

A hydropower plant developed in that river has net head of 100m with overall efficiency
of 89% and 10% of water is required to be left for environmental and downstream use
in river. If the plant is used as peak load plant operating only for 6 hours a day is as
PROR project. Determine the installed capacity of the plant if the plant is designed
based on 40% of time available.
(a) Without pondage
(b) With pondage but allowing 10% of water to be lost in evaporation
[8 marks, 2019 Final]
4. Analyzing the long term flow, the long term mean monthly flow of Tadi Khola flowing
in Nuwakot District is listed to be 4.21, 2.92, 2.14, 1.55, 2.92, 4.86, 21.02, 38.8, 32.33,
16.17, 7.76, 5.82 m3/s from January to December. The downstream release is fixed to
be 10% of driest monthly flow. [1.5+1.5+4+3 marks, modified from 2018 Final]
(i) What is the design discharge when it is set to be at 45% exceedance?
(ii) If the net head is 300m, plant efficiency is 85%, what will be the installed
capacity of the project?
(iii) What is the firm flow, firm capacity, firm energy and secondary energy?
(iv) Compute the volume of the reservoir required to operate the station with firm
capacity corresponding to the discharge 2m3/s more than present firm flow?
(v) Compute the volume of the reservoir required to maintain the deficit of 100MW
power in the power system [same ques + 3 marks, 2017 Final]
5. Pokhara Valley power demand study shows the variation of load as shown in table
below: [2+2+2+2 marks, 2018 Chance]
Time 00-06 06-08 08-10 10-12 12-16 16-20 20-22 22-24
Load (MW) 5 12 15 22 30 45 50 8
(i) Calculate the load factor of the area.
(ii) What will be the installed capacity to supply the load factor if plant use factor
is to be kept 0.90?
(iii) Also calculate the capacity factor and reserve factor of the power supply system
in the area.
6. Define load factor and capacity factor. A runoff river plant operates at 25% load factor
with an installed capacity of 1.6x104 kW when it works as a peak load plant. Find the
minimum flow rate in the stream so that the plant may serve as base load plant. The
efficiency and head are 85% and 20m respectively. Find also maximum LF of the plant
when Q=35m3/s. [2+6 marks, 2017 Final]
7. Draw load curve and load duration curve from the given data. Also calculate the load
factor, capacity factor and utilization factor of a standby thermal power plant having a
capacity of 300MW to supply power at the time greater than 650MW in power system
of Nepal at the following situation:
