Correlation and Regression Analysis Guide

The document outlines a tutorial on correlation and regression, presenting various studies that analyze relationships between variables such as car stopping distances, household water bills, crime rates related to police presence, and employee experience versus component rejects. Each section includes tasks like drawing scatter diagrams, calculating correlation coefficients, determining regression lines, and making predictions based on the data. The tutorial emphasizes statistical methods for interpreting relationships and making estimates based on collected data.

1 CORRELATION & REGRESSION

TUTORIAL 4
1. The Road Transport Department conducted a study to measure the emergency
stopping distances of cars travelling at various speeds. The results were recorded in
the table below.

Travelling Speed Stopping Distances

(km per hour) (km)
70 0.12
90 0.17
50 0.06
110 0.23
100 0.21
90 0.19
60 0.08
80 0.15
70 0.14
100 0.19

a. Draw a scatter diagram.

b. Find correlation coefficient
c. Interpret the value obtained in (b)
d. Calculate coefficient of determination.
e. Explain the value in (d).
f. Determine the least square regression line.
g. Interpret the regression coefficient obtained in (f).
h. Predict the stopping distances of cars travelling at 120 km per hour. Is this
estimate reliable? Why?

2. A research was carried out to identify the relationship between the members in a
household and their monthly expenditure on water bills (to the nearest RM). The table
shows the data collected randomly from ten household in Area A.
Household Members in household Monthly water bills
(to the nearest RM)
1 2 15
2 3 22
3 4 23
4 7 40
5 5 37
6 4 32
7 8 41
8 10 60
9 2 10
10 6 29

a. Draw a scatter diagram.

b. Find correlation coefficient
c. Interpret the value obtained in (b)
d. Calculate coefficient of determination.
e. Explain the value in (d).
f. Determine the least square regression line.
g. Interpret the regression coefficient obtained in (f).
h. Estimate the monthly expenditure on water bills if there were five members in
a household.

3 CORRELATION & REGRESSION

3. A state government is considering increasing the number of policemen in an effort to

reduce crime. A survey was conducted in district of similar conditions to determine the
relationship between the number of policemen assigned and number of crimes
reported. A random sample of 8 districts was selected and the information gathered
is shown.
District Number of policemen Number of crimes
A 15 17
B 17 13
C 25 5
D 27 4
E 17 7
F 12 21
G 11 19
H 22 6

a. State the independent and independent variable.

b. Plot a scatter diagram.
c. Compute the product moment correlation coefficient and explain its meaning.
d. Obtain the linear regression line using the least square method.
e. Estimate the number of crimes reported if there were 18 policemen assigned
in a district.

4. A sample of eight employees is taken from the production department of an electronic

factory. The following table shows the number of weeks of experience in the wiring of
components, and the number of components which were rejected as unsatisfactory
last week.
Employee A B C D E F G H
Weeks of experience 4 5 7 9 10 11 12 14
Number of rejects 21 22 15 18 14 14 11 13

a. State the dependent and independent variable.

b. Compute the coefficient of determination and explain its meaning.
c. Find the least square regression equation of rejects on weeks of experience.
d. Predict the number of rejects expected from an employee with ten weeks of
experience. Comment on the reliability of your estimate.
