SECTION A: (40 MARKS)


Answer all questions in this section.

1. A stone is thrown from the top of a vertical cliff 50m high with an initial velocity of
(4𝑖 + 2𝑗)𝑚/𝑠. find the;
(a) Time at which the stone hits the ground at the base of the cliff.
(b) Distance from the base of the cliff when it hits the ground.

(i) Find 𝑃(𝐵)
(ii) Determine if A and B are independent events (5mks)

5. Forces of magnitude 𝑃𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 2𝑃𝑁 act on a particle vertically upward and positive
horizontal respectively. A third force of 20N act at an angle 𝜃 to the downward vertical.
Given that the particle is in equilibrium, find the value of 𝑃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃. (5mks)

6. A reptile specialist records the mass(m) in Kgs of 150 tortoises in a table below.

8. A block A of mass 6kg, is placed on a rough horizontal rough table. A light


inextensible string connects A to a second block, B of mass 12kg passing over a fixed
smooth pully and B hangs vertically. The system is released from rest. Given A
experiences a fixed resistance of 30N. find the tension in the string. (5mks)

those of rear tyres.

(a) Calculate the spearman rank correlation co-efficient with 5% significance level.

(b) Use the scatter graph to find the value for front wear if the one in rear wear is 4.7mm
for a certain race car. (6mks)

10. (a) A particle is moving in a vehicle plane so that at time t seconds it has velocity V
m/s when 𝑉 = (8 + 2𝑡)𝑖 + (𝑡 − 6𝑡)𝑗 𝑚/𝑠.When 𝑡 = 2s, the particle has a position
vector (10𝑖 + 3𝑗)𝑚 with respect to fixed origin O.
i) Find the acceleration of the particle at time t.
ii) Show that the position vector of particle when 𝑡 = 4𝑠 is 𝑟 = (28𝑖 + 27𝑗)𝑚.

b) A bus is travelling along a straight road at V m/s. when it reaches a point A it
accelerates uniformly for 4s to a speed of 21m/s. at a point B, the driver brakes
uniformly until the bus comes to a halt 7s later. The magnitude of the deceleration is
twice the magnitude of the previous acceleration. Find
i) the value of V.
ii) distance travelled by bus from point A till it stopped. (6mks)

11. a) Show that there are two solutions 𝛼 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝛽, to the equation 3𝑥 + 4 − 𝑥 = 0, such
that 1.6 < 𝛼 < 1.7 𝑎𝑛𝑑 − 1 < 𝛽 < 0. Hence use linear interpolation once to find the
root of the negative root correct to 3 decimals. (6mks).
b) Show that the interactive formula for equation 𝑥 + 3𝑥 − 7 = 0 is given as

𝑥 = , 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑥 = 1.0 to find root to the equation after four iterations correct
to 3 decimal places. (6mks)

12. a) The random variable X is distributed binomially with mean 2 and variance 1.6. find
i) the probability that X is less than 6
ii) the most likely value of X. (5mks)
b) Assume that the weight of 18 year old males in a population follow a normal
distribution with mean 65kg and standard deviation 11kg.
i) find the interquartile range of the weights in the population
ii) In a sample of 100 taken from population estimate how many would weigh below
60kg. (7mks)

13. a) A uniform ladder of mass 10kg and length 6m rests with one end on rough
horizontal ground and the other against a smooth vertical wall. The coefficient of
friction between the ground and the ladder is 0.3 and lakers makes an angle of 650
with ground. A girl of mass 50kg climbs the ladder. How far up the ladder can she
climb before the ladder slips? (6mks)

b) A uniform rod AB of mass 3kg and length 4m is freely hinged to a vertical wall at
A, the rod is held horizontal in equilibrium by a light vertical wire attached to the rod
1m from A, as shown below with the reaction force R at the hinge acting vertically
down.
