Silvered Lens Formula and Properties

The document describes the properties and formulas related to a silvered modified lens system with multiple layers and refractive indices. It presents a general formula for calculating the equivalent focal length (Feq) and an alternate form that incorporates the focal length of the silvered surface (Fm). The nature of the silvered lens is determined by the sign of Feq, indicating whether it acts as a concave or convex mirror.

Silvered Modified Lens

Diagram shows a multi-layered spherical system with refractive indices mu1, mu2, mu3, ..., mun,

and radii R1, R2, ..., Rn-1.

The last surface (with Rn-1) is silvered. mun does not affect silvering.

General formula:

mu1 / Feq = 2 * SUM((mu(i+1) - mui) / Ri) - (2 * mu(n-1)) / R(n-1), where i = 1 to n-2

[Take Ri and R(n-1) with sign]

Also, R(n-1) = Fm = focal length of silvered surface = R(n-1) / 2 (with sign)

Alternate form:

mu1 / Feq + mu(n-1) / Fm = 2 * SUM((mu(i+1) - mui) / Ri), where i = 1 to n-2

Nature of the silvered lens:

If Feq > 0 -> acts as concave/converging mirror.

If Feq < 0 -> acts as convex/diverging mirror.

Mirror formula:

1/v + 1/u = -1/Feq

[Take signs properly]
