CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
2.1 Introduction
This chapter reviews existing literature on the relationship between climate
variability and water resources, with a focus on semi-arid regions like Zaria,
Kaduna State. It explores key concepts, empirical studies, and theoretical
frameworks relevant to the study. The chapter also identifies research gaps
that this study seeks to fill.
2.2 Conceptual Framework
2.2.1 Climate Variability and Change
Climate variability refers to short-term fluctuations in climatic conditions
(e.g., rainfall, temperature), while climate change denotes long-term shifts in
weather patterns (IPCC, 2021). In Northern Nigeria, studies indicate rising
temperatures (∼1.5°C over 50 years) and declining rainfall, leading to
prolonged droughts (NIMET, 2022).
2.2.2 Water Resources: Surface and Groundwater
- Surface Water: Includes rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. In Zaria, the Galma
and Kubanni Rivers are critical but have experienced reduced flow due to
erratic rainfall (Adeboye et al., 2021).
- Groundwater: A major source for domestic and agricultural use, but over-
extraction and low recharge rates threaten sustainability (Kaduna State
Water Board, 2023).
2.3 Empirical Review
2.3.1 Climate Impact on Water Availability
Recent studies in Northern Nigeria highlight:
- A 20% decline in rainfall (2000–2020) leading to lower river discharge
(Oluwasanya et al., 2021).
- Increased evaporation rates due to higher temperatures, reducing reservoir
storage (World Bank, 2020).
2.3.2 Socio-Economic Implications
- Agriculture: Reduced crop yields due to water scarcity (FAO, 2022).
- Domestic Water Supply: Over 40% of households in Zaria face water
shortages (UNICEF, 2021).
2.4 Theoretical Framework
The study adopts:
1. The Hydrological Cycle Theory: Explains how climate affects water
movement (evaporation, precipitation, runoff).
2. Water Scarcity Theory: Links climate variability to reduced water
availability and socio-economic stress (Falkenmark, 2020).
2.5 Research Gap
Most studies in Northern Nigeria focus on broad climate trends without
localized assessments of Zaria’s water resources. This study fills that gap by
providing recent (2020–2024) empirical data.
2.6 Summary
The literature confirms that climate variability significantly impacts water
resources, but localized studies are scarce. This research will contribute
updated findings on Zaria LGA.
