Physics Experiments: Wave & Oscillation Analysis

The document contains a series of physics problems related to wave optics and damped oscillations. It includes calculations for fringe patterns in Young's double-slit experiment, diameters of dark rings in Newton's ring experiment, properties of damped oscillators, and characteristics of harmonic and longitudinal waves. Each problem requires specific formulas and calculations to derive the requested physical quantities.

1. In a Young's double-slit experiment, two slits are separated by a distance of 0.5 mm.

The
screen is placed 1.5 away from the slits. If monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm is used
and the screen is 0.1 m tall. Determine how many fringes will appear within this screen height?
2. In newton’s ring experiment the diameter of 12th dark ring is 1.8 cm and it is changed by
0.43 cm when a liquid is introduced between lens and the plate. Find the difference between
diameters of 15th dark ring for air and liquid.

0.43 cm when a liquid is introduced between lens and the plate. Find the diameter of 15th dark
ring.
4. In newton’s ring experiment the diameter of 10th dark ring is 1.4 cm and it is changed by
0.35 cm when a liquid is introduced between lens and the plate. Find the refractive index of the
liquid.
5. Light containing two wavelengths λ1 and λ2 fall normally on the convex lens of radius of
curvature R, resting on a glass plate. Now nth dark ring of λ1 coincides with (n+1) th dark ring of
λ2. Then prove that diameter of nth dark ring due to λ1 is
√ 4 R λ1 λ2
λ 1−λ 2

6. For damped oscillator mass of object is 0.25 kg, spring constant k= 85 N/m and damping
constant b= 0.07 kg/s. Calculate the time it takes for the amplitude of the damped oscillations to
drop to half of its initial value.
7. For damped oscillator mass of object is 0.25 kg, spring constant k= 85 N/m and damping
constant b= 0.07 kg/s. After how many periods of oscillation does the energy of the damped
oscillations become the half of its initial value?
8. When a simple harmonic wave is propagated through a medium, the displacement of a
particle (in cm) at any instant of time is given by Y = 100 sin 2π/100(36000t −10). Calculate the
amplitude of the vibrating particle, wave velocity, wavelength, frequency and time period.
9. A longitudinal wave is described by the equation Y=0.1cos(2π(200t−x/2)) where Y is in
cm, t in seconds, and x in meters. Calculate the amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and velocity.

10. A wave is described by the equation Y(x,t)=3sin(4πt−2πx) ,where Y is in cm, x in

meters, and t in seconds. Calculate the amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and velocity.
