Scene 1

Heidi (mother) is telling the children and her son a story.

Heidi
Kinder (children), listen and listen carefully. I know you only have knowledge of West
Germany, and this place may seem like your home, but beyond lies a place filled with
darkness.

Children
What do you mean?

Heidi
That’s a great question.
Beyond the wall lies a great empire filled with knowledge and questions unknown to us. All I
can tell you is that the other side is no ideal place, people are worked to the bone and answer
to the Herrscher (ruler)

Archie
So, are you saying there are slaves, mother?

Heidi
Oh Archie. They are far worse than that. They are soulless beings with no free will. They
aren’t even considered human. To them the Herrscher is supreme, and his word is the law.
They may have high technology, but their hearts are barren. The Herrscher is no better, he
preys on people like a beast and shows no mercy.

Once there was a little boy who climbed the wall. He was taken by the general and was
EATEN ALIVE!!!

(Kids gasp)

Every bone chewed. Every drop of blood drunk. All the flesh was…...

(Gunther creeps in)

Gunther
Bhoooo

Gunther
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GUNTHER!!!!!

Heidi
Schweigen (quiet)

Archie
Gunther where were you. Mother told us a scary story.

Gunther
Here and there (slight chuckle)
Heidi
Alright Kinder it’s time for bed.

Child 1
Was that our bedtime story. (Concerned look)

Child 2
How are we going to sleep after that story.

6 years later…….
(Archie is now 15 years old)
(Heidi walks Archie into room)

Heidi
Archibald how many times must I tell you to get up in the morning.

Archie
(In morning voice) Well you know I love my beauty sleep. (Smirk)

Heidi
Ha (smiles faintly) let’s get going, we have a long day.

Archie
Really! But I was planning on seeing Gunther and meine freunde (my friends). We were
planning our own “World Cup”. I’m the Fran’s Beckanbauer of the team. They need me
desperately, besides Suzanna will be there.

(Mother hits Archie in the head)

Archie
I have a precious head you know.

Heidi
You mean a big one. Focus on your studies. You need to be top of your class.

Archie
But what is the point mother!! Even if I do pass, there are no jobs here that can give me good
wages. They’re all the same, we’ll be poor anyways. It’s all because we live this side

Heidi
Do not think like that.

Archie
It’s the reality of living this side
Heidi
Cheer up. Don’t be like tha….

(Banging on door)

Peacekeepers
Peacekeepers. Open up!!!

Heidi
[Link] my boy, hide. Don’t make a sound and don’t move. Don’t open your
mouth, don’t laugh. AND DON’T LOOK!!
