Before anything, let’s do some warm-up

Our topic for today is all about the tone,
mood, techniques, and the purpose of the
author. Let’s talk about tone first.
 It is the author's attitude or feelings
Please read. towards the topic or piece.
 It is usually expressed using words
and sensory impressions in the
piece or written material.
 An author’s tone describes by
adjectives.

So, in the tone, it is all about the attitude

the author used in a literary piece. And you
can see it at the way the piece was written.
How it expresses the words and
impressions of the piece.
And for the last one, what are adjectives

They are the words that modifies a noun or
pronoun.

And to infer the tone of the speaker, you
must observe the words used in the piece.

the words are used in a literary text, we can
figure out the tone.
Next, is the mood. Please read.
 author's mood it is the feeling a
reader gets from what author has
written.
 it is the atmosphere or feeling that
the author creates in the story.

Now, in mood, we are talking about the

emotion or the feelings that the author has
given to the literary piece. It is all about the
atmosphere the piece has. And take note, it
is not the feeling of the readers after
reading it, but the feelings of the piece
itself that the readers picked up.

the mood, please read.
 surprise, shock, mad, loved, lonely,
touched, thankful and others.

Now we will go to the Purpose of the

Author.

 It is the intention an author or a

speaker writes about a topic.
Of course, if you are an author of a text,
you have a purpose for writing it.
Now there are three main purposes, to
remember them, we have “to PIE”. What
are they?

 Persuade
 Inform
 Entertain
Now to persuade, it is just repeating. What
is to persuade?
 the author convinces the readers to
agree to his/her point of view. Also,
the author may give facts to prove a
point.
In this one, the main goal is to what again?

Convince others.
Very good! And sometimes they may give
facts about their subject to prove their
point. And which technique is it that relates
to proving a point or claim?
expository or argumentative
Yes. expository or argumentative can be
also to persuade because it is trying to
convince you to believe in his point.
Now, the next purpose is to Inform.

Correct! As the name suggest, it is for the
entertainment. To make the readers laugh, For entertainment and amusement
cry, to make them happy and satisfied. That
is the very essence of this purpose.
Now, let’s watch the plot summary of a
story entitled “The Lottery.” It was written
by Shirley Jackson.
