Tangent and Normal
Question 1 SL fmurlis
Find the equation of the tangent to the curve y = e x at the point where x = a . Hence find the equation of the
tangent to the curve y = e x which passes through the origin. The straight line y = mx intersects the curve
y = e x in two distinct points. Write down an inequality for m.

Question 2 HL
A curve C has parametric equations
x = ln(2t ), y = tan -1 (2t ) , where t > 0 .
(i) Sketch the curve C, showing clearly the asymptotes and the axial intercepts.

(ii) Show that the gradient of C at the point where y = p is sin 2 p .
2

Hence find the area of the triangle bounded by the x-axis, the tangent and normal to C when p = .

Maximum and Minimum
Question 3 SL 6mails
An animal enclosure is a right angled triangle with one side being a drain. The farmer has 300m of fencing
available for the other two sides, AB and BC.
(a) If AB = x m, show that AC = 10 900 − 6x .
(b) Find the maximum possible area of the triangular enclosure.

Question 4 M18/5/MATME/SP1/ENG/TZ2/Q9 SL
A closed cylindrical can with radius r centimetres and height h centimetres has a volume of 20π cm3.
(a) Express h in terms of r . [2]
2
The material for the base and top of the can costs 10 cents per cm and the material for the curved side costs
8 cents per cm2. The total cost of the material, in cents, is C .
320π
(b) Show that C = 20π r 2 + . [4]
r
(c) Given that there is a minimum value for C , find this minimum value in terms of π . [9]

Question 5 SL 8marks
A circular hollow cone of height h cm and semi-vertical angle 30! stands on a horizontal table. An upright
cylinder of radius r cm and height d cm just fits into the cone as shown in the diagram.

d
(a) Show that d = h - r 3 .

A new flower-bed is being designed for a large garden. The flower-bed will occupy a rectangle x m by y m
together with a semicircle of diameter x m, as shown in the diagram. A low wall will be built around the
flower-bed. The time needed to build the wall will be 3 hours per metre for the straight parts and 9 hours per
metre for the semicircular part. Given that a total time of 180 hours is taken to build the wall, find, using
differentiation, the values of x and y which give a flower-bed of maximum area.

Question 8 M17/2/hl/TZ1/8
A water trough which is 10 metres long has a uniform cross-section in the shape of a semicircle with radius
0.5 metres. It is partly filled with water as shown in the following diagram of the cross-section. The centre of
the circle is O and the angle KOL is θ radians.
The volume of water is increasing at a constant rate of 0.0008 m3s–1.
(a) Find an expression for the volume of water V (m3) in the trough in terms of θ .
dθ π
(b) Calculate when θ = .
