VALVES
VALVES
Valves are used to control the flow of water throughout the
supply system. The proper location of valves simplifies repairs
to the system, fixtures, or equipment being served.
VALVES
VALVES
Functions of Valves:
1. Start or shut down a system
2. Regulate pressure
3. Check Backflow
4. Control the direction of water
VALVES
VALVES
Rules Regarding the Location of Valves:
1. Locate and distribute valves in such manner that they can
isolate a certain section of the network in case of system
breakdown.
2. Locate valves where they are not too visible while remaining
accessible to users.
VALVES
VALVES
There are usually valves at:
1. Pipes in individual fixture or equipment
2. Branches
3. Risers

VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ GATE VALVE
A valve in which the flow of water is cut off by means
of a circular disc fitted against machine-smoothed faces
at right angles to the direction flow.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ GATE VALVE
A valve in which the flow of water is cut off by means
of a circular disc fitted against machine-smoothed faces
at right angles to the direction flow.
Also known as Full-Way Valve.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ GATE VALVE
Used mainly to completely close or completely open.
Does not control flow of water.

VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ GLOBE VALVE
A valve in which the flow of liquid is cut off by means of a
circular disc that fits over and against the horizontal valve
seat.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ GLOBE VALVE
1. Control the flow of water with movable spindle
2. Can reduce water pressure ( throttling )
3. Only one side of the valve is an inlet
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
TYPES OF GLOBE VALVE:
1. The Plug Type Disc Valve - For throttling
2. The Conventional Disc Valve - For shutting
3. The Composition Disc Valve - For steam and hot water
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ GLOBE VALVE
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ BUTTERFLY VALVE
Have a disc equal in size to the inside diameter of the pipe.
This disc is attached to a lever handle that rotates the
disc, which adjust the flow of water.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ DIAPHRAGM VALVE
Is similar to gate valve in that there is a wheel or knob
that moves an element in the valve fitting, which limits the
flow of water.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ CHECK VALVE
A valve that automatically closes to prevent the flow of
liquid or gas in a reverse direction.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
TYPES OF CHECK VALVE
1. The Swing Check Valve
2. The Lift Check Valve
3. Vertical Check Valve
4. Horizontal Check Valve

VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ ANGLE VALVE
Operates in the same m a n n e r a s t h e g l o b e v a l v e . I t i s
available in similar range of disc and seat design.
Angle valve is used in making 90 degrees turn in a line to
reduce the number of joint.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ BALL VALVE
Are made with rotating sphere that has in it. In the open
position, the hole in the sphere is in line with the pipe.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ BALL VALVE
The lever handle operates the valve, but also serves as
indicator for whether the valve is open or closed. When the
lever is parallel to the pipe, the valve is open.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ BALL VALVE
Ball valves do not allow for precise flow control because
they usually have positive stops ( 0˚, 45˚, 90˚), but they do
provide a very good seal in the closed position.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ FAUCET / BIBB
A valve located at the end of water pipe through of which
water can be drawn from or held within the pipe.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
TYPES OF FAUCET / BIBB
1. Compression Cock
2. Key Cock
3. Ball Faucet

TYPES OF FAUCET / BIBB
1. Compression Cock
Operates by the compression of a soft packing upon a metal
sheet.

Operates with round tapering plug ground to fit a metal sheet.

Constructed with a ball connected to the handle.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
A safety valve which automatically releases a substance from
a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system, when the pressure
or temperature exceeds preset limits.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
The purpose of a pressure relief valve is to control or limit
surges of pressure within pipelines, acting as protection for
the system, and defending against instrument or equipment
failure. They are usually present in clean water industries.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ PRESSURE BALANCED VALVE
Use to maintain a constant temperature of water in domestic
showers or bathtubs.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ PRESSURE BALANCED VALVE
A diaphragm within the valve allows the operator to set
mixing of hot and cold water, however in the event of a
pressure drop of cold water, the diaphragm will shift to
limit an excessive flow of hot water.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ PRESSURE BALANCED VALVE
Many jurisdictions re q u i r e p r e s s u r e b a l a n c e d v a l v e i n
domestic bathrooms and showers to prevent accidental
scalding.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ FLUSHOMETER VALVE
Is a device, which discharges a predetermined quantity of
water into fixtures for flushing purposes and is actuated by
direct water pressure.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ FLOAT VALVE
An integral part of a cistern or tank. Their sole purpose is
to shut off the flow of water at a predetermined level.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ FOOT VALVE
Is located at the lower end of a pump used to prevent loss of
priming the pump. It is sometimes referred to as Retention
Valve.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ FOOT VALVE
It is a non-return valve installed in a pump suction or at
the bottom of pipelin e s t o p r e v e n t w a t e r f r o m f l o w i n g
backward when the pump is off.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ CORPORATION STOP
Is inserted to the water main. It serves as a control of the
water service and also serve as shut off, when service is
disconnected.

VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ CURB STOP
Is installed between the curb and the sidewalk line
accessible to cast iron stop box equipped with removable
cover.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ CURB STOP
It serves as control stop of the service between the curb and
the building. It shut off water supply in case the basement
becomes flooded.

A valve placed at the street side of water meter and serves
as a controlling device for the building installation.

TYPES OF VALVES
❏ ZONE VALVE
Used in hydronic heating and cooling systems to control the
flow of water of steam.

TYPES OF VALVES
❏ LOCKING VALVE
Almost any type of valve can be locked to avoid accidental or
intentional opening or closing.
VALVES
TYPES OF VALVES
❏ LOCKING VALVE
However, valves with lever-type handles allow for more secure
locking control.
