Operating System (OS)

An Operating System is a software that helps the


computer hardware to work with other computer
software. A computer is of no use without an
Operating System.

It will move only when the
DRIVER starts it.
Example- There is a car So, the DRIVER is the
in a house. It has petrol, OPERATOR of the car..
engine and wheels.
But it is not moving. When
will the car move?

Similarly , Operating System is the DRIVER of
a computer, which makes it run. Without an
Operating System, a computer cannot work on
its own. It allows us (the users) to interact with
the computer. It take care of all the inputs and
send output on the monitor.

Types of Operating System (OS)-

There are two types of Operating


Systems-
1) Single –user Operating System.
2) Multi-user Operating system.

Single-user Operating System-

A Single –user Operating System allows only one person to work


on it at a time.
Examples-Windows 7, 10, etc which are usually meant for home
use.

[Link]-user Operating System-

A Multi-user Operating System allows many people to use the


same computer at the same time or at different times. This
computer, which has the multi-user OS, is attached to many
other computers. Examples: UNIX, Linux etc.
It is used in offices and big organizations such as Hospitals
and Railway Stations.

MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Microsoft Windows ( MS Windows) is a very


popular Operating System(OS). When you switch
on the computer, it takes some time to get
started. This is because the computer takes
place some time to load the operating system in
its memory. This process is called Booting.

A Folder is like a container
