Human Muscle Definitions

Upper Body Muscles:

1. Sternocleidomastoid – A neck muscle that helps in rotating and flexing the head.
2. Trapezius – A large muscle on the upper back that moves, rotates, and stabilizes the shoulder blade
and extends the neck.
3. Deltoid – The rounded shoulder muscle responsible for lifting the arm and giving the shoulder its
range of motion.
4. Pectoralis Major – A large chest muscle used for pushing movements like lifting or throwing.
5. Serratus Anterior – Located on the side of the chest; helps move the shoulder blade forward and
upward.
6. Biceps – The front upper arm muscle involved in bending the elbow and rotating the forearm.
7. Palmaris Longus – A forearm muscle that helps with wrist flexion; not present in all people.
8. Flexor Carpi Radialis – Helps flex and abduct the wrist.
9. Brachioradialis – A forearm muscle that helps bend the elbow.
10. External Oblique – Part of the abdominal muscles; helps in rotating the trunk and bending
sideways.
11. Rectus Abdominus – Known as the “abs”; responsible for bending the spine forward (e.g., in a sit-
up).
12. Flexor Digitorum Superficialis – A forearm muscle that helps bend the fingers.
13. Lumbrical – Small hand muscles that assist in finger movements.

Hip and Thigh Muscles:

1. Gluteus Medius – Located at the side of the hip; helps with hip abduction and stabilization.
2. Tensor Fasciae Latae – A thigh muscle that stabilizes the hip and knee; assists in hip flexion and
abduction.
3. Rectus Femoris – Part of the quadriceps; helps extend the knee and flex the hip.
4. Pectineus – A hip muscle that helps with hip flexion and adduction.
5. Sartorius – The longest muscle in the body; helps in hip and knee flexion and crossing the legs.
6. Vastus Lateralis – Part of the quadriceps group; helps extend the knee.
7. Adductor Longus – A thigh muscle that brings the legs toward the body's midline (adduction).
8. Gracilis – A long, thin muscle that helps in hip adduction and knee flexion.
9. Vastus Medialis – Another part of the quadriceps; extends the knee and stabilizes the kneecap.

Lower Leg and Foot Muscles:

1. Tibialis Anterior – A front lower leg muscle; helps lift the foot (dorsiflexion).
2. Peroneus Longus – Helps with foot eversion and plantarflexion (pointing toes down).
3. Gastrocnemius – The main calf muscle; helps with jumping and running by pointing the toes
(plantarflexion).
4. Soleus – A calf muscle beneath the gastrocnemius; also helps with plantarflexion.
5. Extensor Digitorum Brevis – A foot muscle that extends the toes.
6. Extensor Hallucis Brevis – A small muscle that helps lift the big toe.
