Problem Set No.3
1. Oil having [Link]. of 0.9 and viscosity v=0.0002 m²/s flows upward through an inclined pipe as
shown. Determine the flow rate.
2. Gasoline at 20°C ([Link]. 0.719, 𝜇=0.000292 Pa-s) flows at the rate of 2 L/s through a pipe having an
inside diameter of 60 mm. Determine the Reynolds number.
3. If 140 L/s of oil flows through the system shown, determine the total head lost between points B
and C.
4. What is the hydraulic radius of a rectangular air duct 300 mm by 500 mm?
5. Air at 1500 kPa flows in a 25-mm-diameter tube. What is the maximum laminar flow rate. Use
density of air = 14.04 kg/m³ and 𝜇=0.0000217 Pa-s.
6. A water district which serves a suburban community needs a new water transmission main which
will supply the area from an existing reservoir. The line will be 5.3 miles long. The reservoir elevation
is +280 feet, and the town elevation at point of discharge is +100 feet. No pumping will be
provided, and the water will be delivered to a non-pressurized storage tank in town. The proposal
is to build a single line of new smooth clean cast iron pipe. Darcy “f” is assumed to be 0.021. The
present demand is 1 MGD.
a. Determine the minimum diameter pipe that could be used.
b. Determine the commercial size of pipe that would fulfil the need of the system?
c. Determine the value of the Manning’s n which would apply to this particular installation.
7. The flow rate of water through a cast iron pipe is 5000 GPM. The diameter of the pipe is 330 mm,
and the coefficient of friction is f=0.0173. What is the pressure drop over a 30-m length of pipe?
8. A tube 15 m long is to connect two large tanks whose difference in water level is 2 m. The tube is
to carry 5 L/s of flow. What minimum size of tube is necessary to assure laminar flow condition?
9. The water system in a suburban area consists of an old 200-mm pipeline 760 m long which conveys
water from a pump to reservoir whose water surface is 107 m higher than the pump. Water is
pumped at the rate of 0.07 m³/s. Determine the horsepower saved by replacing the old pipe with
a new 250-mm pipe. Assume the value of f as equal to 0.033 and 0.022, respectively, for the old
and new pipes. Neglect losses of head except friction head.
10. Paint issues from the tank is shown at Q=45 ft³/h. Assume laminar flow conditions and neglect
entrance and exit losses.
a. What is the velocity of flow in the pipe.
b. Determine the head lost in the pipe.
c. Determine the kinematic viscosity of the paint in ft³/s.
11. A capillary tube of inside diameter 6 mm connects tank A and open container B, as shown in the
Figure. The liquid in A, B, and capillary CD is water having a specific weight of 9780 N/m³ and
viscosity of 0.0008 kg/(m-s). The pressure PA = 34.5 kPa. Assume laminar flow.
a. Determine the head loss in the pipe in terms of the discharge Q.
b. Determine the discharge in L/s.
c. Determine the Reynolds Number.
