SECTION A (Attempt ALL items)
ITEM 1 (15 marks)
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is developing a new digital tax system to process customs
declarations at Entebbe International Airport. The system uses polynomial encryption where
each trader's tax code is processed through the function P(x) = x³ - 6x² + 11x - 6. The system
flags transactions for audit when P(x) = 0, and customs officers have noticed unusual activity
when x = 3, suggesting this might be a critical security point.
The airport's cargo processing efficiency follows Q(x) = 2x³ - 5x² + 3x - 7, where x represents the
number of processing units active. URA needs to determine when Q(x) = 0 to identify optimal
staffing levels that prevent system bottlenecks during peak import seasons.
Tasks:
a) Use the factor theorem to determine if (x - 3) is a factor of P(x). (3 marks)
b) Completely factorize P(x) and find all values where transactions are flagged for audit. (5
marks)
c) Given that (x - 2) is a factor of Q(x), find the other factors and solve Q(x) = 0. (4 marks)
d) Determine which polynomial has more irrational roots and explain the significance for system
security. (3 marks)
ITEM 2 (15 marks)
MTN Uganda is installing 5G base stations across Kampala for improved network coverage. The
signal strength S (in dB) at distance d meters from a base station follows S(d) = 60 + 20cos(0.1d)
+ 15sin(0.2d). Network engineers need to ensure minimum signal strength of 50 dB for quality
service, while avoiding interference hotspots above 85 dB.
The optimal antenna angle θ for maximum coverage must satisfy the equation 2cos²θ - 3cosθ + 1
= 0. Additionally, the network's data transmission rate R (Mbps) relates to signal strength by R =
10log₂(S/40), and MTN requires at least 25 Mbps for 5G standard compliance.
Tasks:
a) Find the maximum signal strength and the first distance where it occurs (0 ≤ d ≤ 100m). (4
marks)
b) Solve 2cos²θ - 3cosθ + 1 = 0 for 0° ≤ θ ≤ 360° to find optimal antenna angles. (4 marks)
c) Determine the minimum signal strength needed for 25 Mbps transmission rate. (3 marks)
d) Find distances where signal strength equals exactly 70 dB when d ≤ 50m. (4 marks)
ITEM 3 (15 marks)
Cipla Quality Chemical is developing a new malaria treatment where drug concentration C(t) in
blood follows C(t) = 8e^(-0.2t) + 4e^(-0.1t) mg/L, where t is hours after administration. The
therapeutic window requires concentration between 6 mg/L and 12 mg/L for effectiveness.
Below 6 mg/L, the drug fails to kill parasites; above 12 mg/L, patients experience dangerous side
effects.
The drug's half-life relationship follows log₂(C/C₀) = -kt, and the dose-response for parasite
clearance is given by Response = 60 + 25log₁₀(Dose/8), where Response is the percentage of
parasites eliminated and Dose is in mg.
Tasks:
a) Calculate the initial concentration C(0) and find when maximum concentration occurs. (4
marks)
b) Determine the time interval during the first 12 hours when the drug remains in the therapeutic
window. (5 marks)
c) Find the drug's effective half-life using C(0) from part (a). (3 marks)
d) Calculate the required dose for 85% parasite clearance using the dose-response equation. (3
marks)
ITEM 4 (15 marks)
Solar Now Uganda is implementing a rural electrification project in Gulu district, where solar
panel efficiency improves by 2.5% with each additional installation due to shared infrastructure.
The efficiency after n installations follows E(n) = 100(1.025)ⁿ percent. The project targets 150%
efficiency improvement to secure continued World Bank funding.
The cost-benefit ratio is calculated as R(n) = [(1.025)ⁿ - 1]/(0.025n), and the project becomes
profitable when R(n) > 2.5. The load balancing system requires finding the coefficient of x⁴ in (2
+ 3x)⁶ for harmonic analysis calculations.
Tasks:
a) Expand (1.025)⁵ using the binomial theorem to the first four terms. (4 marks)
b) Find the coefficient of x⁴ in the expansion of (2 + 3x)⁶. (3 marks)
c) Determine how many installations are needed to reach 150% efficiency. (4 marks)
d) Using the first three terms of (1 + 0.025)ⁿ, approximate R(15) and determine if the project is
profitable. (4 marks)
SECTION B (Attempt any TWO items)
ITEM 5 (20 marks)
The Uganda Space Research Programme is launching Earth observation satellites to monitor
agriculture and climate. Each satellite's orbital velocity is v = √(GM/r) where G = 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹
m³/(kg·s²), M = 5.97 × 10²⁴ kg, and orbital radius r = 2 × 10⁷ m. The fuel consumption rate
during orbital adjustments follows F(t) = (3t² + 5t + 2)/[(t + 1)(t² + 1)] kg/hour.
The satellite's ion thruster efficiency depends on η = (∛(27) × ∛(64))/(∛(8) × ∛(125)), and the
power system operates at P = 2^(2x+1) × 3^(x-1) watts, where x is the thrust setting. Mission
success requires solving 4^x × 9^(x-1) = 12^(2x-1) for optimal power configuration.
Tasks:
a) Calculate the orbital velocity, expressing your answer with surds and as a decimal. (4 marks)
b) Simplify the thruster efficiency expression η completely. (3 marks)
c) Express F(t) in partial fractions form. (5 marks)
d) Set up the integral ∫₀² F(t)dt for total fuel consumption over 2 hours. (3 marks)
e) Solve 4^x × 9^(x-1) = 12^(2x-1) for the optimal thrust setting. (5 marks)
ITEM 6 (20 marks)
UNRA is constructing a cable-stayed bridge over River Nile near Jinja, where the main cable
follows y = 30 + 25sec(πx/200) meters for -100 ≤ x ≤ 100 meters. The cable tension at position x
is T(x) = 1500(1 + tan²(πx/200)) kN, and support towers are positioned where cable height
equals 65 meters.
The bridge's natural frequency analysis reveals critical resonance at angles satisfying 3cos²θ -
5cosθ + 2 = 0. The bridge deck's maximum displacement under load follows log₁₀(d + 4) - log₁₀(d
- 1) = log₁₀(3), where d is displacement in centimeters.
Tasks:
a) Find the minimum cable height and its location. (3 marks)
b) Simplify T(x) using the identity 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ. (3 marks)
c) Find the positions of support towers where cable height = 65m. (4 marks)
d) Solve 3cos²θ - 5cosθ + 2 = 0 for 0° ≤ θ ≤ 360°. (5 marks)
e) Calculate the maximum bridge deck displacement d. (5 marks)
ITEM 7 (20 marks)
Uganda Virus Research Institute is studying mosquito population dynamics for malaria control.
The population of genetically modified mosquitoes after n weeks follows P(n) = n³ - 7n² + 14n -
8, while wild mosquito population grows as N(t) = 25,000e^(0.06t). The breeding intensity varies
seasonally according to B(t) = 120 + 60sin(πt/26) + 40cos(πt/13), where t is time in weeks.
The gene drive effectiveness is E(t) = 1 - e^(-0.08t), and the project succeeds when E(t) ≥ 0.75.
The population interaction creates a limiting model N_total(t) = 100,000/(1 + 2e^(-0.05t)), and
researchers need to determine when the total population drops below 30,000.
Tasks:
a) Factorize P(n) completely and find when P(n) = 0. (4 marks)
b) Find P'(n) and determine when the rate of change is maximum. (3 marks)
c) Calculate when the wild population doubles from its initial value. (3 marks)
d) Find the maximum and minimum breeding intensities over 52 weeks. (4 marks)
e) Determine when gene drive effectiveness reaches 75%. (3 marks)
f) Find when the total population drops below 30,000 mosquitoes. (3 marks)
