Solutions - NEET Chemistry Chapter Notes

1. Types of Solutions:

- Solid in Solid (e.g., alloys), Liquid in Liquid (e.g., alcohol in water), Gas in Liquid (e.g., soda), Gas

in Gas (e.g., air).

2. Concentration Terms:

- Mass % = (mass of solute / mass of solution) x 100

- Mole Fraction (chi) = moles of one component / total moles

- Molarity (M) = moles of solute / volume in L

- Molality (m) = moles of solute / mass of solvent in kg

- Normality (N) = gram equivalents / volume in L

3. Solubility:

- Depends on temperature and pressure.

- Henry's Law: p = kH x mole fraction

4. Vapour Pressure & Raoult's Law:

- P_total = xA·PA° + xB·PB°

- Ideal: Delta H_mix = 0, No volume change. Non-Ideal: Deviations observed.

5. Colligative Properties:

- Relative Lowering of Vapour Pressure: Delta P / P0 = x_solute

- Boiling Point Elevation: Delta Tb = Kb·m

- Freezing Point Depression: Delta Tf = Kf·m

- Osmotic Pressure: pi = CRT

6. Abnormal Molar Mass & van't Hoff Factor (i):

- i = observed colligative property / expected

7. NEET Tips:

- Keep units in SI, temperature in Kelvin, R approx. 0.0821.
