Essential Geography Study Guide

The Basic Geography Study Guide covers essential concepts in geography, including the five themes: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. It distinguishes between physical geography, which examines natural features, and human geography, which focuses on human activities and their impacts. Introduction to Geography
What is Geography?

Geography is the study of Earth's surface, its features, and the relationships between people and
their environment.

The Five Themes of Geography

1. Location: Where things are located

o Absolute location: Exact position (latitude/longitude)
o Relative location: Position relative to other places
2. Place: Physical and human characteristics of locations
o Physical features: Mountains, rivers, climate
o Human features: Buildings, culture, language
3. Human-Environment Interaction: How people adapt to and modify their environment
o Adaptation: Building houses suited to climate
o Modification: Damming rivers, clearing forests
4. Movement: How people, goods, and ideas travel
o Migration of people
o Trade of goods
o Spread of ideas and culture
5. Region: Areas with similar characteristics
o Formal regions: Political boundaries
o Functional regions: Areas organized around a central point
o Perceptual regions: Areas defined by people's perceptions

Types of Geography

Physical Geography: Studies Earth's natural features

 Landforms, climate, vegetation, water bodies

Human Geography: Studies human activities and their impact

 Population, culture, economics, politics

Physical Geography
Earth's Structure

Layers of Earth:

1. Crust: Thin outer layer (continents and ocean floor)

2. Mantle: Hot, dense rock layer
3. Outer Core: Liquid iron and nickel
4. Inner Core: Solid iron and nickel

Landforms

Major Landform Types:

 Mountains: Elevated land with steep slopes

 Hills: Rounded, elevated land (lower than mountains)
 Plateaus: Flat, elevated land
 Plains: Large, flat areas of land
 Valleys: Low land between hills or mountains
 Islands: Land completely surrounded by water
 Peninsulas: Land surrounded by water on three sides

Plate Tectonics

Types of Plate Boundaries:

 Divergent: Plates move apart (new crust forms)

 Convergent: Plates collide (mountains/trenches form)
 Transform: Plates slide past each other (earthquakes)
Results of Plate Movement:

 Mountain formation
 Earthquakes
 Volcanic activity
 Ocean floor spreading

Water Bodies

Oceans (largest to smallest):

1. Pacific Ocean
2. Atlantic Ocean
3. Indian Ocean
4. Southern/Antarctic Ocean
5. Arctic Ocean

Other Water Bodies:

 Seas: Smaller
