8. He was one of the first 19th century artists to depict modern-life subjects.
9. He was a key figure in the transition from realism to

14. founders of the impressionist movement along with his
15. friends Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille. He was the
16. most prominent of the group; and is considered the most influential figure

18. for his landscape paintings, particularly those depicting his beloved
19. flower gardens and water lily ponds at his home in Germany.

21. RADIO TEACHER: next is AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841-1919), along with Claude
22. Monet. was one of the central figures of the impressionist movement. His
23. early works were snapshots of real life, full of sparkling color and light. By

1. the mid-1880’s however Renoir broke away from the impressionist
2. movement to apply a more disciplined, formal technique to portraits of
3. actual people and figure paintings.

6. (PLAY STINGER FOR 3 SECONDS) an outgrowth movement known as a
7. post-impressionism emerged. The European artists who were at the
8. forefront of this movement continued using the basic qualities of the
9. impressionists before them the vivid colors, heavy brush strokes, and

11. expanded and experimented with these in bold
12. new ways, like using geometric approach, fragmenting objects and
13. distorting people’s faces and body parts, and applying colors that were
14. not necessarily realistic or natural. Two of the foremost post-
15. impressionists were Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh.

9. In the early 1900s, there arose in the Western art world a movement that
10. came to be known as expressionism.

13. To achieve this, they distorted outlines, applied strong colors, and
