About Africa

AFRICA
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous
continent, after Asia in both cases. At about 30.3 million km²
including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of Earth's total surface area
and 20% of its land area. With 1.3 billion people as of 2018, it
accounts for about 16% of the world's human population.

THE NILE
What is a River?
A river is a stream of water that flows through a channel in the surface of the
ground. The passage where the river flows is called the river bed and the earth on
each side is called a river bank. A river begins as a small stream, and gets bigger
the farther it flows.

What is a Waterfall?
A waterfall is a river or other body of water's steep fall over a rocky
ledge into a plunge pool below. Waterfalls are also called cascades. The
process of erosion, the wearing a way of earth, plays an important part
in the formation of waterfalls.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River in southern Africa, which
provides habitat for several unique species of plants and animals. It is
located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and is one of the
world's largest waterfalls, with a width of 1,708 m!

Lake Kivu
What is a lake?
Lakes are large bodies of water that are surrounded by land
and are not part of an ocean. Lakes are relatively still bodies of
water when compared to a river where the water flows. They
can contain either salt or fresh water and are larger than
ponds.
Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is one of Africa's strangest bodies of water. An unusual set of
properties make it an intriguing subject for scientists, as well as a
potential source of both peril and prosperity for the millions of people
living nearby. Kivu doesn't behave like most deep lakes.
For some, Lake Kivu is a “killer lake”, containing vast amounts of
carbon dioxide and methane in its deep, anoxic waters, and it has
been compared to Lakes Nyos and Monoun, whose eruptions caused
massive animal and human death in Cameroon.

The African Table

What is a Plateau?
The East African Plateau is a large plateau in the eastern part of central
Africa in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Its elevation is mostly between
1000 and 1500 meters. It is subdivided into a number of zones running
north and south and consisting in turn of mountain ranges, tablelands,
and rift valleys.

The African Rift System

What is a Rift Valley?
A rift valley is a lowland region that forms where Earth's tectonic plates
move apart, or rift. Rift valleys are found both on land and at the
bottom of the ocean, where they are created by the process of seafloor
spreading.

The East African Rift System

East African Rift System, also called Afro-Arabian Rift Valley, one of the
most extensive rifts on Earth’s surface, extending from Jordan in
southwestern Asia southward through eastern Africa to Mozambique. The
system is some 4,000 miles (6,400 km) long and averages 30–40 miles
(48–64 km) wide. Great Rift Valley which stretches from the Middle East in
the north to Mozambique in the south. The area is geologically active, and
features volcanoes, hot springs, geysers, and frequent earthquakes

What is a Mountain?
A mountain is a landform that rises high above the surrounding terrain
in a limited area. They are made from rocks and earth. Generally,
mountains are higher than 600 meters. Those less than 600 meters
are called hills. Some have trees growing on their sides and very high
mountains have snow on their peaks.

The African Peaks

The highest African mountain is Kilimanjaro, which has three peaks,
named Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira, of which Kibo is the tallest. Mount
Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa which also has three
main peaks, namely Batian, Nelion and Lenana Point.
At the summit, Uhuru Point, the night time temperatures can range
between 20 and -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to -29 degrees Celsius).

The Hot Desert

What is a Desert
A desert is any location on Earth that receives less than ten inches of
rain per year. Deserts are extremely dry and may be either very hot or
very cold. Hot deserts are extremely hot during the day and cold at
night
The Sahara
Africa - the second largest continent in the world is also home to the
largest desert in the world - the Sahara. In fact there are three deserts
on the continent - The Sahara, the Namib and the Kalahari. Together
these three amazingly vast and diverse land masses cover a large
portion of Africa.
When you combine these deserts, an estimated 31% of Africa's area is
desert. You can note that there are small parts of the desert in Senegal,
Ethiopia, and even South Africa.

What is a Rainforest?
Rainforests, as you might guess, are forests that receive a great amount
of rainfall—more than 80 inches each year. Composed of millions of
unique ecosystems, rainforests are the central nervous system of our
planet—a hotbed of evolution, life, and diversity.
The Congo Basin
The Congo Basin makes up one of the most important wilderness areas left
on Earth. At 500 million acres, it is larger than the state of Alaska and stands
as the world's second-largest tropical forest. A mosaic of rivers, forests,
savannas, swamps and flooded forests, the Congo Basin is teeming with life.
The vast African rainforest stretches across much of the central African
continent, encompassing the following countries in its woods: Benin, Burkina
Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory
Coast), Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon,
Gambia, Guinea, ..
The Savannas
Physical Features: African Land

The Grassland
What are Grasslands?
Grassland, area in which the vegetation is dominated by a nearly
continuous cover of grasses. Grasslands occur in environments conducive
to the growth of this plant cover but not to that of taller plants,
particularly trees and shrubs.
The Savannas
The African savanna ecosystem is a tropical grassland with warm
temperatures year-round and with its highest seasonal rainfall in the
summer. The savanna is characterized by grasses and small or dispersed
trees that do not form a closed canopy, allowing sunlight to reach the
ground.
Africa's great savannas are a place dominated by sky and rolling
grassland. Their wildlife has long been the focus of filmmakers,
photographers and writers. Of Africa's great plains regions, the Serengeti
is the most famous.
The African
Climate
The African Climate

The Climate
What is Climate
Climate is a wind, temperature, humidity, Atmospheric pressure, rainfall
and other elements, over a long time and effecting a large area.

The African Climate

Africa's climate is dominated by desert conditions along vast stretches of its northern and
southern fringes. The central portion of the continent is wetter, with tropical rainforests,
grasslands, and semi-arid climates. ... Temperatures are about the same as those in the
desert regions
The climate of Africa is a range of climates such as the equatorial climate, the tropical wet
and dry climate, the tropical monsoon climate, the semi-arid climate (semi-desert and
steppe), the desert climate (hyper-arid and arid), and the subtropical highland climate.
As Africa is on the equator it gets the most sunlight!
The low latitude of the landmass is another asset: much of the continent lies in the
intertropical zone, where the intensity and the strength of the sunlight are always high. The
area contains lots of vast sun-drenched arid and semi-arid expanses in the north, in the
south, and to a lesser extent in the east.
