Explain the different Phases of Design.
A hydraulic press exerts a total load of 3.5 MN. This load is

press. If the safe stress is 85 MPa and E = 210 KN/mm 2. [AP] CO1
Find 1. Diameter of the rods, and 2. Extension in each rod in
a length of 2.5 m.
A shaft, as shown in Fig., is subjected to a bending load of 3

A circular bar of 500 mm length is supported freely at its two PO1,

ends. It is acted upon by a central concentrated cyclic load PO4,
having a minimum value of 20 kN and a maximum value of PO6,
50 kN. Determine the diameter of bar by taking a factor of PO8,

The material properties of bar are given by: ultimate strength
of
650 MPa, yield strength of 500 MPa and endurance strength
of 350 MPa.
A simply supported beam has a concentrated load at the
centre which fluctuates from a value of P to 4 P. The span of
the beam is 500 mm and its cross-section is circular with a
5 diameter of 60 mm. Taking for the beam material an ultimate
stress of 700 MPa, a yield stress of 500 MPa, endurance [AP] CO1
limit of 330 MPa for reversed bending, and a factor of
safety of 1.3, calculate the maximum value of P. Take a size
factor of 0.85 and a surface finish factor of 0.9.
