CPU Components and Functions Explained

The document outlines the components of a CPU and their functions, including the Fetch-Decode-Execute cycle and the roles of the Control Unit and ALU. It describes various registers such as the Program Counter, Memory Address Register, and Memory Data Register, which are used for instruction and data handling. Additionally, it explains the types of buses (address, data, and control) that facilitate communication between CPU components.

CPU Components & Their Function

Fetch-Decode-Execute Cycle
CPU/ALU/CO
It is responsible for carrying out instructions (the Sequence of
steps that make up Computer program)
CPU used to wright and read data from memory
Control Unit- manage execution of instrctions by sending
control signals to organise the action and other parts of cpu.
ALU - Carries out arithmetic and logicol operators

Registers
temporary storage locotions within the CPU which holds an
instrction, adress or Singe initem of data.

Program Counter (PC) -Ht bolds the memory adress of te next

instctionto be fetched.

Memory Adress register (MAR)-holds the memory adress of

either fhe next piece of data to be read or fhe next instruction

Memory Data Register (MDR) - holds the instruction or data

from main memory.
Current Instruction Register (CIR) -the holds the instuction
Currently began decoded and executed.

Buses
* Adress bus - carries the memory address of the next
instruction from RAM to CPU.
* Data bus - comes data ond insfruction belween the dif@ient
components.
* Control bus - carries Control signal from the control unit to
the other Componentsin the CPU

Bus width - The number of nies that used to trangfer the

number of bils af a
time Cdato or adress)
