4 Introduction
 Demolition, or razing, is the science and engineering in safely and efficiently tearing
down of buildings and other man-made structures. Demolition contrasts
with deconstruction, which involves taking a building apart while carefully
preserving valuable elements for reuse purposes.
 When the building structure is very old and not desirable to take the load
dismantling of structure is necessary.
 Building structure is very old
 Any part of building has become weak
 Internal change to be done
 Life of structure is over

5 Need of planning of demolition
process
 Demolition work is one of the most dangerous operation in construction.
 Communication problems in usually very unclear sites can put workers at
high risk of falling from height, being hit by objects, getting buried by
collapsing elements etc.
 Easy to cause injury to human workers due to accessing into or working inside
a building which is under construction
 Falling of smaller objects or debris from demolishing building.
 Falling of partially demolished structure.
 Collapse of unstable structure due to original structure being disturbed.

6 Need of planning of demolition
process
 Collapse of heavy demolition equipment due to inadequate support of
partially demolished structure.
 Collapse of the partially demolished structure due to the accommodation
of large amount of uncleaned debris .
 Congested site environment that cause easily damage to human workers,
or to the third parties and their properties and their properties that are
situated near by site.

– to control the falling of the debris into a pre-
determined vertical shaft formed on the floor slabs

14 Demolition methods
 Simple demolition
 The demolition methods,e.g. bucket, rock shovel
bucket, Rubble shovel bucket, heavy duty bucket
and many more are classified into simple
demolition method because these are applicable
to demolish masonry in simple way.

15 Hammering

 Repeated hammering can be used to

crack and break concrete.
 Stone chisel: used for light brick house
 Hand hammer:
 Large size hammer: this is mounted on
crawler type wheel type machine. Two
types of energy is transferred to
hammering rod one is pneumatic force
and other is hydraulic force.

25 Bursting
 Concrete and rock can be spit by bursting force in hole. This method
classified into static bursting e.g. buster with wedge and chemical
expansive demolition agent and dynamic bursting. E.g., water gun, gas
cylinder, cardox, milde explosives.

 Chemical expansive demolition agent
 Water Gun

organic fuel, plasma, and laser beam.

28 Shearing and feeling

 Shear can only cut rebars and shaped steels

 Hand shear
 Hydraulic large size shears
 Feeling of columns and smokestacks
 Feeling by blasting of explosive.
