Assignment-3
1. Find rod diameter and spigot diameter for cotter joint if axial load is 60 KN. τ = 75 N/mm2, σt =
75 N/mm2 and σc = 150 N/ mm2
2. 2 Two tie rods are to be connected by a knuckle joint to resist an axial pull of 20 kN. The
allowable stresses are: τ = 60 MPa, σt = 75 MPa. Find tie rod diameter and diameter of pin.
3. A semi elliptical leaf spring consists of two extra full length leaves and six graduated leaves
including the master leaf. The central distance between two eyes is 1 m. The width and
thickness of leaves are 50 mm and 7.5 mm respectively. The leaves are pre-stresses in such a
way that the maximum stress induced in the leaves is 350 MN/m^2. Find the maximum central
load that the spring can withstand.
4. The following data refer to a screw jack: Load to be raising P= 40 kN, Safe compressive stress in
screw = 90 N/mm^2, Pitch of single start square threads= 6 mm, allowable bearing pressure =
17.5 N/mm^2. Find Size of screw, height of nut and shear stress in the nut.
5. For frame of a ‘C’ clamp has rectangular cross section of 60 mm X 20 mm. A maximum clamping
load of 20 kN is acting at a distance of 60 mm from the inner edge of the frame. Find the
maximum and minimum stresses induced in the frame section.
