Newton-Raphson Convergence Criteria

The document outlines the Newton-Raphson and Modified Newton-Raphson methods for finding roots of nonlinear equations, including their iteration formulas and convergence criteria. It provides step-by-step instructions for applying the methods, emphasizing the importance of selecting an initial value and checking convergence through a specified stopping criterion. Several examples illustrate the application of these methods, including the use of graphical methods for predicting initial values.

1. Let’s say you want to solve (find the root or roots of If this criteria is satisfied, you will converge to the root.
the nonlinear equation f(x). However, if it is not satisfied you may still converge,
perhaps it may cost a lot of iterations or diverge.
This means f(x) = 0 x=?
5. Select a value of significant number of digits, m. And
2. Write the Newton-Raphson iteration formula then evaluate the stopping criteria for the iterations,
εs=0.5 x 10 (2-m) %.

3. Select an initial value of x0 to start iterations.

4. Check the convergence criteria for the numerical

method.

6. If 𝜺𝜺𝒂𝒂 = x 100% <= εs=0.5 x 10 (2-m) %. Then

stop the iterations.
