CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. With

the click of a button, we can connect with friends and family, share our thoughts and

experiences, and access endless information. However, as the use of social media

continues to rise, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on our behavior,

particularly among students. In this investigation, we will explore the influence of social

media addiction on students' behavior and delve deeper into this complex issue.

The definition of social media is "the relationships that exist between networks of

people"(Walter & Riviera,2004).Social media refers to websites and applications that

allow users to create and share content or participate in social networking. Social media

platforms provide tools for creating and sharing text, images, videos, and other types of

content with other users on the [Link] media platforms allow users to connect

with friends, family, and people from around the world. Users can follow, like, and share

content from other users, as well as engage in discussions through comments and private

messages.

Social media addiction has become a pervasive problem in today's society, especially

among young people. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

TikTok, and Snapchat have transformed the way people communicate, interact, and share

information. However, excessive use of social media can have negative consequences on

individuals' behavior, especially students.

In addition, addiction as described by the American Psychological Association (2014)

refers to a "compulsive behaviour that leads to negative effects" wherein, like in other

forms of addictions such as drugs, gambling, video gaming, overeating etc., people feel

bound to particular activities such that they become harmful habits, which then obstructs

other important activities in their lives such as their school works and performance and

this can be said of people specifically students who use social media excessively.

On the other hand, as students are being addicted to social media they tend to get

influence with the things they have seen and encountered in these platforms. This is a

senous problem for this could negatively impact the student's behavior which is evident

in their actions in schools.

In contrast, a study by Karadkar (2015) shows that social media networks have a

detrimental impact on pupils since they spend more time there than they do with their

books. Additionally, according to some research, social media has a negative impact on

students' grades since they spend more time there than they do getting ready for class

(Annetta, Minogue, Holmes & Cheng 2009; Junco, 2012). Instead of studying or

engaging with others in person, students ignore their schoolwork by spending time on

social networking websites (Karadkar, 2015).Participating often and actively on social

networking sites can hurt students' grades or impede their progress toward future careers

(Karadkar, 2015). According to Walsh (2013), students who used social media the

most exhibited fewer academic behaviors, such as finishing their homework and

attending class, had lower academic confidence, and more issues that affected their

schoolwork, such as sleep deprivation and substance abuse.

Additionally, there are benefits and drawbacks to social media. Students' conduct is

affected by social media in both positive and negative ways. The student's privacy is

invaded, it keeps them from completing their tasks, they become overly dependent on it

and spend too much time there, and it sometimes spreads false information that makes

people afraid. These are the things that can affect them, and even though there are many

things that can affect them, there are still positive effects such as the ability to

communicate with loved ones, knowledge of current events, participation in online

forums, and assistance in socializing introverted teenagers (Parnala, 2012).

Therefore, research into how socal media addiction affects students behavior is essential

to comprehending the possible danger of its excessive use. We can find ways to

encourage responsible social media use and provide efficient treatments to deal with any

unintended consequences by examining the link between social media addiction and

behavior among students that could result from addiction.

Investigating the influence of social media addiction on students' behavior is an important

topic of research, as it can help us understand the impact of social media on students'

academic performance, mental health, and social interactions. The research can also

provide insights into the factors that contribute to social media addiction, such as

personality traits, social pressure, and online disinhibition.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study focuses on the students who are studying and enrolled at Camiling school for

Home Industries stts for School Year 2022-2023.

This study focused on the students backgrounds of social media and it's consequences on

their behaviors. The students background of social media was confined to the specific

social media platforms they use, such as Facebook, Youtube Instagram, Twitter,

Snapchat and Tiktok as well as their frequency of use. Moreover the influence of social

media in the behavior of students are limited to their academic performance, social

interaction and mental health.
