taste, or feel matter. Solids, liquids, and gases have
different properties—or characteristics—that are helpful
in differentiating one from another.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOLIDS
Solids have a fixed shape and fixed volume, which
means they don't move to fill a container when they're
placed in it. They hold their own shape and volume. A solid
is a state of matter which has a fixed shape and volume. It
is characterized by particles that are closely packed
together in a regular arrangement.
Examples of solids are the following:

bricks and other building materials, like concrete, wood and
glass;
dry ice or frozen carbon dioxide;
ice;
most metals;
most minerals;
rocks; and
salt.
a. Solids hold their own size and shape.
Because the molecules of solids are tightly packed, solids
will not move to fill a container that they are in.
b. Solids can
be brittle
or elastic. Brittle solids break

easily. An elastic solid stretches and, oftentimes, returns to
its original shape.
c. Solid have weight. This
refers to the lightness or heaviness
of the solid.

d. Solids have color.
Color is one important
property that helps in
identifying
solids.
e. Solids
also have different textures.
This refers to how solid feels. For example,
an apple can feel smooth on the outside, and grainy on the
inside.
f. Solid hardness. It refers to how hard it is to bend,
dent or scratch the solid to change its shapes. It would be
easy to scratch or bite an apple to change its shape. But
that is difficult to do on something very hard like a glass.
