Chapter 26: Step into my territory and dare to negotiate terms with me

In the immortal cultivation world, one day equated to ten days in the doomsday realm. Wu
Ping had spent two days cultivating immortals while it had been twenty days in the doomsday
world. The school remained the same, but the walls had grown taller, more people filled the
premises, and fortifications adorned the main buildings. Doors and windows were sealed
tightly.

Standing atop a building, Wu Ping surveyed the surroundings and muttered, “Is it really
three-legged? Forget it, they just need someone to take care of the tree for me.” Regardless of
whether people were human, the tree held the utmost importance.

Twenty days later, in a classroom-turned-meeting room, a large conference table dominated

the space. Five people sat around it—Cao Ke, Cao Ling, Xu Feifei, a long-haired man, and a
one-eyed man. The two newcomers eyed Xu Feifei and Cao Ke. They were the bosses from
the first shelter Wu Ping had encountered, their small refuge washed away in the zombie
evolution frenzy.

In the ongoing struggle for survival, they arrived at the school, clashed with Xu Feifei and her
group, and escalated into a standoff. Wu Ping had been away; in the meantime, both groups
reached the second level of evolution. Unable to overpower each other, they divided the land
and coexisted for ten days.

Tensions rose when some women, including Xu Feifei, switched sides. The doomsday
environment heightened emotions, leading to renewed conflict. Despite their rough
demeanour, the struggle yielded the same results. The two newcomers, intrigued by rumours
of Wu Ping’s strength, were surprised to learn he had been absent for over 20 days.

Speculating that Wu Ping had reached at least the third or fourth level of evolution, they
found solace in the thought that he might have ventured into the realm of the strong. This
realisation relieved them, as they believed that if Wu Ping had not returned by now, he might
have chosen not to come back.

The prospect of having numerous women under their control excited the two newcomers,
particularly Cao Ke and her companions. The idea of playing freely with them appealed to
their rough nature. The group, unaware of Wu Ping’s fate, continued navigating the
challenges of the doomsday world.

This isn’t right.

“Cao Ke, I’ve outlined the terms before. I’ll trade food and water for the women on your side.
This is the third time my brother has come. Just three simple requests. Understand? Don’t be
shameless!” The long-haired man slammed the table.

Cao Ling’s fiery temper flared up instantly. “No matter how much you insist, it’s impossible.
Did you hear that? That woman was given to you by us. I don’t know how many hands she’s
passed through, and I still hold onto her. I’m not afraid of filth!”

“Cao Ling, stop pretending. One, I think it’s two. Beautiful flowers are coming in.” While the
long-haired man spoke, a timid girl entered and stood next to him. She weakly said, “I’m
sorry, Sister Cao. I think it might be better to follow them. We don’t have much food and
water.”

“Do you hear that, Cao Ling? Do you still want me to reveal your family background?”

“You have nothing to eat anymore. Yes, we’re all second-level evolutionists, but the three of
you can’t do anything against me and my brother. We can wait. Who’s going out to find
food? After going out, there are two people left, two to two. Are we still afraid of you?”

“If you know what’s good for you, make an honest deal or kneel and beg. Xu Feifei, you’re
pretty bold. I haven’t ridden a big horse yet. Help my brother out; he’ll give you a bread
bag!”

The bald head next to him laughed unscrupulously.

“If you do what my brother said, we can discuss it. Will we manage this place together and
live like Earth emperors?”

“As for that man, Wu Ping, right? He’s been gone for more than 20 days. He may not want
you anymore. He hates you as a burden. It’s better to follow me. I’ve established a shelter.
Follow me, and you won’t go hungry,” the bald man said proudly.

Applause echoed.

Everyone present turned their heads but found no one around. The long-haired man listened
carefully. Opening the curtains, they saw a handsome young man in black standing on a dark
cloud, applauding with a smile.

This strange scene frightened the long-haired man. Stammering, he asked, “Are you… human
or a ghost?!”

This immediately attracted others’ attention. Excitement filled their eyes when Cao Ke and
the others saw Wu Ping. Cao Ke, the leader identified by Wu Ping, had considered the
problems mentioned by the bald man.

Now Wu Ping was back.

They breathed a sigh of relief. Whether Wu Ping was good or bad, he didn’t force them into
anything. They could live like human beings.

Dark clouds rose from Wu Ping’s feet, quickly blocking the window. Hideous zombies and
evil spirits loomed, staring at the living flesh in the room.

When did these two brothers meet in that terrifying formation?

Legs and bellies cramped. Xu Feifei stepped forward, opening the window. Wu Ping walked
in and sat down. Zombies and evil spirits outside quickly poured in, hovering in every corner
of the classroom, staring at them.

“Entering my territory to negotiate with my people?”

“Here are a few new ways to play. Listen up.”

“Light the sky lantern, peel, cut alive, wash your intestines, and draw bones…”

Common questions

The negotiations and deals made by characters, featuring trade-offs involving human lives for resources, pose significant ethical challenges as they shift moral boundaries to prioritize survival. These actions raise questions about the moral compromises made under duress, such as when food scarcity or power dictates trading individuals' freedom or status. Ethical considerations are overshadowed by the immediate need to survive, presenting a grim view of societal breakdown and emphasizing the moral ambiguity faced by individuals when survival becomes paramount .

The societal breakdown in the story drastically alters traditional social norms, with women treated as commodities for trade and advantage. The interactions and negotiations involving women, such as those led by the long-haired man and the bald head, exploit their status as bargaining tools, leading to objectification and diminished authority. This reflects a regressive, survivalist mentality where gender roles become skewed, emphasizing power and resource control over normative ethical behavior, illustrating how societal collapse can exacerbate existing gender disparities .

Resource scarcity forces characters to adopt more pragmatic and often harsh social structures, evident in bargaining human lives for essentials like food and water. This setting heightens characters' vulnerability, showcased by the shifting allegiances and moral compromise, such as Xu Feifei's group's negotiations and confrontations over remaining resources. These changing dynamics illustrate adaptability as characters must navigate evolving power hierarchies, negotiation tactics, and survival strategies to persist in the doomsday environment .

Wu Ping's absence initially contributes to speculation and plans by other characters who believe he has ascended to a higher evolutionary state and might not return, thus leaving an opportunity for others to vie for leadership and control, notably making them consider ruling as 'Earth emperors.' His sudden return, however, disrupts these emerging power structures. It reinforces the characters' reliance on his strength and presence, relieving some and instilling fear in others. Wu Ping's unexpected reappearance, with supernatural elements like controlling zombies, reframes the control dynamics, asserting his authority and influence .

The time difference, where one day in the immortal cultivation world equals ten days in the doomsday world, significantly impacts Wu Ping's actions by allowing him to spend what he perceives as a short period cultivating immortals, while significant time passes in the doomsday realm. This accelerated progression means that while Wu Ping is cultivating, tenfold more changes occur in the doomsday realm, impacting the state of survivors, the school's defenses, and the power dynamics, as seen in the standoff situation described among the survivors .

Wu Ping standing on a dark cloud with a supernatural entourage symbolizes elevated status, control, and mystery. This imagery not only solidifies his status beyond mere human but also enhances thematic elements of power, authority, and supernatural intervention. It creates a godlike or demonic figure embodying strength, control over the supernatural, and contrasting moral qualities as both savior and threat, depending on perspective. This duality enriches thematic discussion on power's impact within society struggling for survival .

The power dynamics among the survivors, as reflected by the interactions at the school, emphasize survival and control themes. The division of land and coexistence between groups highlight negotiation and the balance of power. The shifts brought about by people like Xu Feifei switching sides stem from resource scarcity, leading to conflicts over resources like food and water, and control over individuals. These interactions illustrate the desperate measures individuals resort to, including offering individuals in exchange for necessities, reflecting the harsh survival realities in a post-apocalyptic world .

Supernatural elements, such as zombies and evil spirits under Wu Ping's control, significantly influence negotiation dynamics by introducing an overriding force that surpasses human capabilities. Their presence creates a climate of fear and awe, shifting the balance of power distinctly in Wu Ping's favor. This supernatural intervention discourages open conflict or resistance from the opposing groups, as seen when Wu Ping enters the room with his entourage, effectively altering the psychological and strategic landscape the survivors operate within .

Fear and uncertainty following Wu Ping's return play critical roles in altering power balances and perceived personal security. Characters initially speculating on Wu Ping's prolonged absence must reassess their strategies, as his return with supernatural elements reintroduces unpredictability and threat. This environment exacerbates the existing tension between groups, redefining control and security. It illustrates how unpredictability in leadership and strength profoundly affects social dynamics, forcing survivors to navigate shifting allegiances and power plays to maintain their security and position .

The evolving hierarchy among survivors underscores broader social commentary on leadership, showcasing how power is often claimed and maintained through strength rather than consensus or ethical guidelines. In crisis, leadership shifts from moral authority to those who can provide immediate safety or control resources, as demonstrated by negotiations for food and water or control over other individuals. This survivalist approach highlights both the pragmatic and fragile nature of influence in crisis situations, where traditional leadership qualities are replaced by authority and power dynamics .
